i have only usaed for a couple of hours riding but it shifted cleanly and with little noise, what i want to comment on is how strong this chain seems to be.
after trying to shorten the chain a little (simple job you might think) i am stunned at how strong the links are.
to start with it destroyed my link removal tool,so on to the old 6" nail and hammer..didnt touch it, next up..a bench clamp and nail..still nothing, in fact i bent 3 heat treated nails before giving up. so i got angry and tried driving a steel wedge beetween the link plates hoping to pop the pin and allow better acces..barely bent the plates at all, in the end i had to use a grindstone to grind the link pin out which was supprisingly easy.
so imho it may wear down throgh friction but it sure as hell aint going to snap.
only bad point i can think of is if it did break on the trails your going to have big problems..but i doubt it will. strong strong chain
Bought this chain as I had read the reviews on how strong it was and I was going to the alps with a large group and didn't want to have a chain break holding everyone up, it won't break in a million
years.
After now using it for 3months the only trouble I've had is that I broke my rear mech off the other day and tried to shorten the chain to get home, The rivet pushed through ok with a lot of force to remove some links, but the pin would not go back through the back plate on the chain no matter how careful I was at lining the pin up and the massive ammount of force I used to push it through (the back plate just bent).
If you buy this chain carry a sram power link with you just in case. (once the kmc power link is locked together it won't come apart)
Great chain - only downside if you're unprepared is you can't join it with a chain tool, so if it breaks out on the trail you need a couple of spare powerlinks or whatever KMC call them, just in case. Still need the tool to remove any twisted ones.
Used SRAM for a while before & thought they were the best until I had 2 or 3 snap on me in a short space of time - might have been a bad batch, but might be they're the same as KMC in that joining them with a chain tool weakens them. To be fair, SRAM tell you to use the Powerlink, but magazines etc say you can join them with a tool & keep the Powerlink for quick fixes on the trail. I reckon the powerlink is stronger.
Anyway, realised how good the KMCs are - all they ever needed was a spray of GT85, even in winter. Just had a new bike with a cheaper SRAM chain - needs constant over the top lubing otherwise it rusts/seizes. The KMCs seemed to last ages however they were treated. Boring, but hopefully useful if you can stay awake...
