We have the 'three front; seven rear' version of these lights and they are excellent. They are very bright and the rear light (which is different to the style in the photo, but better) has three LEDs pointing straight backwards, and the rest are slightly angled to improve visibility. Very effective.
I got the Polaris II 3 LED front and 7 LED rear for my daily commute in the winter. It transformed other road users' awareness of me on the road. The front LEDS are so bright they reflect off road signs hundreds of metres away. Got the 3 LED lamp which I was impressed with, just bought 5 LED version - not a major improvement from what I can tell, on identical batteries, can see the 5 LED a touch brighter. Beam distribution on the 3 LED is a very well defined, evenly lit circle. The 5 LED manages a similar cicle but with not quite as uniformity in it's beam pattern.
