Shimano FC-M970 XTR HollowTech II Cranks &BB M970
Since its introduction, XTR has held true to its original design philosophy of delivering top-level performance in a lightweight, beautifully-engineered package. For 2006, XTR raises the bar again – by reducing complete group weight by almost a pound, increasing stiffness & strength, and delivering even more durability. When combined with innovative new features, XTR delivers the ultimate riding experience.
Incorporating the benefit of rigidity with minimal weight of the Hollowtech II combined bottom bracket and crankset system, the new FC-M970 manages to drop even more weight while increasing shifting performance and durability
Features
• Patent-protected chain ring design means unmatched shifting performance: Market standard front shifting performance (when combined with a Shimano front derailleur) is taken even further by the precision molding and machining of the composite carbon fiber and titanium middle chainring and greater rigidity of the outer chainring. • Enhanced durability: The titanium teeth of the middle chainring along with Ni plated the double anodized chain interface surface of the outer ring combine to a conservative 100% increase in durability over prior generation XTR chainrings. • More precise bearing adjustment: The new left hand crank arm mounting system provides a higher integrity solution that creates more precise bottom bracket bearing adjustment, extending the bearing life while keeping rotating resistance to a minimum. • Lighter weight and more versatile: Even with all of the additional benefits over prior generations, the new FC-M970 shaves even more weight from the current model thanks to the composite carbon fiber / titanium middle chainring. The 44-32-22 rings also share the same bolt pattern as other popular Shimano cranksets such as XT and LX.
Been riding theese for the last 3 months still got the XTR logo on the side.
Good product, nice and stiff, very light with great shifting.
A complete pain in the ass to fit, If you're not confident take it to a bike shop!
If you do it alone you may need the BB tool! Also make sure you tighten the allen bolt after the first few rides.
Basically RTFM!!!!
Having used the M960 XTR chainset prior to these I found them to be light, stiff and reliable (the chainrings even lasted 12 months). But having a penchant for all things shiney and new, I invested in these M970's and so far haven't been disappointed. While they aren't an MTB technological break-through, they appear lighter than the previous incarnations and they look bang up to date with a uncluttered, simplistic design. Shifting is super fast and they do all jobs they were designed to do with the greatest of ease. The bottom bracket has not been changed from the old model and whilst fitting the non-drive side crank arm isn't difficult, there are a couple of fiddly 'screw-on plastic space fillers' which appear to be more of an afterthought than a benefit to the design.
Overall, initial impressions are very good but time will tell whether the chainrings last longer than the M960's chocolate-and-butter constructed ones and I'm fully expecting the crank faces to be worn off within a couple of weeks.
Buy them. They're good.
What can I say that has not all ready been said? These are super light and stiff cranks that takes smooth shifting to another level. I agree with the fitting comments, they are a pain, the plastic adjuster had me scratching my head as Shimanos instructions are possible the worst ever written bar none!
But if you do splash out you won’t be disappointed would recommend to anybody.
