Bought a front and back light set for my son's bike for school and realised what changes in bike lighting I had missed.
Did some research for front lights for me and settled on the EHP315 over the SMART equivalent for road use and well known trails. I preferred the reasonable weight of the NiMH battery and the small sized lights compared to SMART.
Its true that they are low on instructions, but even I managed, no problem and how many instructions should you need; battery, lights and switches?
As supplied, the battery had a bit of life but the 10w bulb lit once and died, one of the pins had broken. No-one's fault realy. £2.49 later from Maplins, solved and I was going to do that anyway. Smart battery is well worth the money and stops you cooking it. Even though the tell tale lamp comes on before you lose everything I have a Smart front LED in my Camelback just in case.
You get a reasonably large pool of light where you need it and with the 5w pointed a bit down and the 10w overlapping and in front you get similar lighting levels at a distance to give you a couple of seconds notice and view obstructions all the way to the front wheel.
You can just make enough bits out with the 5w in complete darkness but I preferred having both on together. The 5w gives plenty to be seen by others, although obviously not from directly to the side, and gives great battery time. I'm going to get a 15w hot bulb (recommended max), just to see what it can do and I'll interchange bulbs according to what riding I'm going to do and the battery duration needed.
These are cracking value for the money and I'm rediscovering trail cycling at night, which I could get accustomed to. Great fun.
I've been running these lights for a couple of weeks now, and am very happy with them. Lighting level is fine for my needs - not daylight bright, but not so poor that you need to slow down. Separate lamp mounting for the 5w and 10w also mean I can put just the 5w on my 'cross bike and have a pretty good roadgoing light system as well.
Having carried out lots of research & read horror stories of overcharging lead acid batteries, I was delighted to find these lights which I think are great. The battery fits neatly into your bottle holder & there are separate switches for each light which you can mount conveniently on the handlebar. I have had good run times on rides in my local woods with 10w on constantly & 5w on the tricky sections giving about 2 hours battery life. I'm no fast downhill rider but these are fine for x country stuff.
