Punctures are a memory. The SmartGuard‚ layer made from a flexible, special rubber offers particular resistance to shards of glass and flints. Even a thumbtack cannot penetrate this protective layer. The SmartGuard belt does not increase rolling resistance. The MARATHON PLUS rolls as easily as a tyre without protection.
Bought the 25mm version a couple of weeks ago. Use them for commuting with some rough sections and plenty of broken glass in parts and have had no problems with punctures in a few hundred miles. Grip is good in wet and the tyres roll much better than I would have expected. Reflective strip is useful for visibility from side. I wouldn't buy anything else for commuting.
I replaced the Continental Contact tyres that came on my Kona Sutra with a 38c pair of these, and the improvement has been immense. Firstly, I don't get puntures any more, full stop. Secondly, the ride is much smoother over the bumps than before. This is mainly due to the profile of the tyres being so much wider. In fact, I had to take a drill and a hacksaw to my SKS chromoplastic mudguards for the tyres to fit underneath them! It was worth it though - I ride 21 miles through central London every day, and there is broken glass all over the place. I no longer need to worry about punctures, and the super bumpy roads of Peckham don't make my teeth fall out any more!
p.s. I have run 26" versions of these tyres on my mountain bike for over a year with no punctures.
I've commuted with one of these tyres on my rear wheel for so long the blue smartguard strip began to show through the worn rubber; and still no puncture. I've replaced the tyre now, and put a pair on my touring bike too, and my wifes commute/tour bike, and my friends have them too; and still no punctures!
