New from Ragley, another slight-off-the-wall frame that makes sense in a new way. Taking 29in wheels (that roll over things nicely), Ragley designers decided to focus on rigid handling, with a rigid only 29in frame. Designed around easily-obtainable 440mm forks (typically used for suspension corrected 26in wheels), the TD-1 gives an unashamed head down, ass up race position, race proven in enduro races under the wheels of the Ragley team riders (podium finishes at Sleepless in The Saddle and Strathpuffer).
Hand welded in the deep south of the good old US of A, by the girls at Lynskey Performance (they have lots of female welders), with cold worked and butted tubing, sliding dropouts for wheelbase tuning or singlespeed use, and Ragleys 3-finger chainstay bridge for huge mud and chainring clearance.
I guess you could describe this frame as an evolution in 29ers. Everyone knows they roll better and hold their speed better, but most have lost out in the past in the tight, twisty stuff. This frame doesn't, clever angles, tubing lengths and light weight mean you still get the speed and stability, but where most 29ers would be limited to carving round the outside of tighter corners with this you get an extra 'snap' - drop it into the corner, fast, pull it round a tighter line and scare yourself with just how quickly and sharply you rail round the bend. It's up there with 26" wheels somehow. I've yet to find a downside!
OK it's not bargain bucket cheap, but the quality isn't hard to find; the finishing on the frame and some of the design features show there's a huge amount of thought gone into it and the ride quality is everything you'd expect from a quality Ti frame. You won't feel beaten up riding this thing. Your legs will give way, it'll get dark and you'll run out of battery power on your lights before that happens...you'll also find yourself ruddy miles away from where you started, as I have on several occasions already (and am looking forward to doing again!)
A non suspension corrected 29er is something I've been keeping an eye out for a long time; I was starting to think no one was brave enough to fill the niche with a rigid only bike. Then I found the TD-1. Great geometry that allows for fast tight handling. Definitely a race machine! I have mine setup SS with a Pace RC-31 (440mm A-C) fork. The fabrication by Lynskey is super nice, and the Paragon Sliding drop-outs are a nice touch. I am 5' 10" with 32.5" inseam and I went for an 18" frame with a 70mm stem; fits great! Wonderful frame by Ragley.
at least one podium place in every race the pre-production bikes have been raced in, two podium places at the Strathpuffer.
if you want to get from here to there very quickly indeed or just do more laps than the other bloke, this is for you.
