Garmin Edge 800 Performance & Navigation Bundle

Make the most of every ride with The Edge® 800 — the first touch-screen GPS bike computer. Providing navigation and performance monitoring, Edge 800 is ideal for touring, commuting, competitive cycling and mountain biking. It has a built-in basemap and tracks your distance, speed, location and ascent/descent. Use it with an ANT ™ heart rate monitor (included), speed/cadence sensor (included) or compatible power meter for a finely tuned analysis of your ride.

At Your Fingertips - Garmin designed this display to be rugged enough to stand up to the elements, yet sensitive enough to respond to the tap of your gloved hand. Switch training pages or pan and zoom the map with just a tap. The bright, sunlight-readable colour display is easy to view in all lighting conditions. Just don’t let its good looks fool you — Edge 800 is waterproof to IPX7 standards and can withstand hard knocks and scrapes it might endure in mountain biking environments.

The aerodynamic Edge 800 has a carbon fiber look with accents and attaches to the stem or handlebar of your bike with the low-profile mount. A quarter-turn mount design holds unit securely and lets you easily swap it between bikes using removable, reusable bands.

Know Where To Go - Whether your bike is a means of transportation or escape, having maps at your fingertips makes every journey easier and more fun. Edge 800 comes with a built-in basemap that shows major roads and cities, plus it’s compatible with our microSD™ cards packed with street maps. Select a destination and Edge 800 provides turn-by-turn navigation prompts on screen.

The Edge 800 can also guide you along routes recorded by other cyclists. Explore our Garmin Connect™ site and choose from millions of rides uploaded by other users. Any activities you upload to your Edge 800 are stored as courses. You can follow the course with navigation prompts or, for a little competition, race it and try to beat previously set goals. You can also use Garmin’s free BaseCamp™ software or other applications to create a route, view elevation changes and other data, and then upload to Edge.

The Edge 800 records your every move with a high-sensitivity GPS receiver that stays locked on, even under tree cover. The receiver features HotFix® satellite prediction to calculate your position faster, plus it has automatic time zone adjustment.

Data, Any Way You Want It - Edge 800 tracks a bunch of data from your ride and lets you customize up to three training pages so you can see as much or as little data as you want. The barometric altimeter provides extra-precise climb and descent data and records temperature changes.

If you’re a performance cyclist, you can pair Edge 800 with a third-party ANT enabled power meter to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter. This version of the Edge 800 also comes with a speed/cadence sensor and heart rate monitor.

Training Tools - Need a little motivation to push your performance? See how you measure up to the Virtual Partner® — a digital depiction of your goal speed vs. your speed in real-time. Other training features include detailed workout planning, Auto Pause®, Auto Lap® and Courses, which helps you compare successive rides over the same route.

Analyze Your Ride - You logged the miles, now it’s time to review, replay and share your ride. Just upload your data to Garmin Connect™, our website for free data analysis and sharing. You can upload from your PC or Mac using the included USB cable. At Garmin Connect, you can see the route you travelled on a map, view a summary of your ride, create goals, share it with others and much more.

Used the edge 800 when touring around South Africa. This simple yet very functional unit proved to be an invaluable tool. The unit is a very good compact, yet viewable size for its map functionality.

After using the Edge 305 for years I was looking for a GPS with map functionality. Most GPS devices are just too big for my liking so the choice for the 800 was easily made. And I must say: I am amazed. Most other devices I have tried are difficult to understand and equally difficult to operate. With its touch screen the Edge makes life easy. Yes, it is hard to hit it exactly on the right spot when going down a rough path. But you should keep your eyes on the road ahead and once set to the right zoom level you really don't need to touch it much.

I have used the Edge 800 at a couple of road and trail rides. The only time it didn't do what I wanted was when I tried to navigate back home, but that's what you get when you enable two maps at the same time. My mistake ...

Using maps based on openstreetmap (velomap and mtbmaps) tracks and routes are very easy to read. I use an anti-glare protection sheet, so I don't know how well it works in bright sunlight on its own. The screen sensitivity is also great. It works well with full finger gloves, but I suggest to use a nail instead of your fingertip when not wearing gloves. Touching the screen with sweaty fingers leaves stains that reduce the screens readability. Something to get used to for all the iPhone users out there.

And finally I must say the heart rate monitor strap is a bless. You hardly feel it on your body, which is a huge advantage over most other straps on the market. Effectively it is just an elastic band with a sensor unit attached to it.

My conclusion: the Edge 800 is a device worth paying for.

The Edge 800 includes a temperature sensor that will display and record temperature along the course of your ride.

Workouts/Intervals:
Once you’ve got the basics of the Edge 800 down, you may start to look at planning downloadable workouts. I often use this feature actually for races more than training. It helps me to execute on a given race strategy.

Touch Screen: In short…no problems with gloves.
However, one of the first things you’ll notice is it still retains two key buttons for Stop/Start and Lap/Reset – in addition to a power button. In my mind, this is a fair compromise. The two buttons I generally use are these two, and I rarely need to change menu’s very much while riding.

Mapping via City and Topo Maps:
This is important, because the base imagery that Garmin would otherwise provide isn’t terribly useful and doesn’t have many of the streets that you’d likely cycle on.

You have two options when you by City Navigator – one is to buy the DVD and the other is to buy the SD card. I was sent the SD card, but I also have the DVD version from when I originally bought the Edge 705. Both work just fine, though the MicroSD card is certainly quicker.

Garmin Custom Maps:
In addition to utilizing downloadable/purchasable maps, you can also create your own maps and upload them to the Edge 800 via Garmin Custom Maps. This is particularly useful if you have maps that contain additional data not found via common providers. For example, you may have a map that lists all port-o-john’s in your area (any cyclist/runner knows this is important). However, for my example I simply grabbed the city’s local bike maps and went to town.

Summary:
In summary, this device rocks. It’s everything that most cyclist have been asking for – even if they didn’t know they were asking for it. I love the new mapping capabilities as it bridges the gap from hard to decipher street maps, to crystal clear satellite imagery. The ability to create custom maps is really really cool, and I’m looking forward to folks whipping up some relevant maps for cyclists and longer races.
That said – for a purely dedicated cycling computer, there’s nothing like it today. And that includes the phone world. There is no phone/app combo I’m aware of that does all of the features that the Edge 800 does from complex mapping and navigation to ANT+ data integration.

No review would be complete without the Pro’s and Con’s list – so here I present the time honored tradition:
Pro’s:
- Easy to use and small form factor
- Compatible with all major online/offline training applications
- Supports ANT+ accessories
- Improved virtual partner feature
- Use of satellite maps
- Creation of custom maps
- Very quick touch screen UI
- You can take screenshots by holding the power key
- You can change the background to both custom and pre-set images
Con’s:
- Wireless data transfer to other units removed
- Unclear on touch screen long term use with gloves in winter
- Not ‘connected’ to the Internet, no options for live data updating (like cell phone)
- Unable to get large satellite map sets onto device due to download limiters set

The Garmin Edge 800 has the brightest and largest screen, with the largest numerals, that Garmin has produced in a cyclecomputer. The numerals and words on-screen are also a bit "fatter" and thus easier to see than previous models. The screen was readily visible in full sunlight.
It didn't take long to get used to the unique touchscreen controls, and the fact that the controls are large and well-marked makes them superior to small and difficult-to-read physical side-button controls.
I have extensive mileage on the Edge 800's sister models, the 705 and the 500, and the 800 really is a "cross" between them including the best of both, plus the new touchscreen. Racers will still prefer the more compact (and mapless) 500. Those who are interested in a bigger display with more options and an amazing color mapping and navigation capability will go for the 800.
Overall, this is best-in-class navigation that borrows much from Garmin car GPS.
