The key to wheels that are strong and reliable is having spokes that are properly and uniformly tensioned. The Tension Meter accurately and reliably measures the absolute tension of each of the spokes in a wheel, as well as the relative tension between all the spokes in a wheel. Easy to use and priced affordably, it works on nearly any bicycle spoke-no matter what the diameter, material, or shape. Not just for the experienced mechanic, the TM is for anyone building or truing wheels, diagnosing wheel problems, or assembling new bikes.
The TM includes a spoke gauge for measure the diameter of the common spokes, and a tension conversion table for 16 different spokes, including titanium and carbon. It's a tool that belongs on every workbench. NOTE: The Spoke Tension Meter requires approximately 105mm (4 1/8-inch) of accessible spoke to read.

I've had this tool for some months now and have used it to successfully help build 26inch front and rear wheels from scratch as well as truing 700C touring wheel sets. Wheel building/truing is not a skill that's achieved overnight and takes a lot of practice and some background reading but this tool gets you there faster!
Using this tool your spokes will have equal tension and also the correct tension. Only very experienced mechanics can achieve the same result just by feeling or hearing.
Of course it does NOT replace a trueing stand. You have to combine both tools. Alternately true the spokes according to the tension meter and to the trueing stand. After some turns your wheels will be fine and remain round for a long time.
This tool does the same job as e.g. a way more expensive DT Swiss Tensiometer.

I hesitated too long before buying this. Fantastic, really takes the guess work and risk out of wheel building. With time and effort, along with the .xls worksheet off the Park tool website you can build top notch wheels with this thing, and keep an eye on your wheels over time. It is also fun to check friend's wheels and see that their spoke tension is all over the place ! A pleasure to use..
