As a bit of a gear junkie, I rarely feel that anything I have purchased is truly a bargain. This, however, is. I'm fed up with XTR - For me it has been a nuisance and a bother. A lot of bread for components which need nothing more than Epping Forest mud to bring them to their knees within weeks of buying them. So, having moved to Avid brakes and SRAM shifters, I thought that this time around I'd try SRAM's top end cluster. I'm not a weight weenie, this not being as light as XTR isn't an issue for me. The difference in the two is probably no bigger than a bunch of mud around my BB shell anyway. Performance wise, this thing is fabulous. Shifts flawlessly and feels fantastic using the SRAM chain. It was easy to fit and looks the dog's nuts too, with just enough of a pimped out carrier to be cool, without going OTT.
At around half the price of XTR I truly believe that it would be almost impossible to justify coughing up all that money for Shimano kit, when the PG990 performs equally well, if not better. It really does seem too good to be true. Something that is reasonably priced, performs briliantly and looks good. Does exactly what it says on the tin........
Buy one.
this is my second 990. if you look after the chain it will last well too. my last one has lasted for 10 months! considering i ride in sandy muddy conditions twice a week for around 20 miles i am impressed. i am also a heavy rider and pull big gears on short power climbs and i have never managed to bend or break my last one. if you have the budget and are prepared to look after your drive system it is worth the cash.
A good cassette. It performs well and gives smooth gear changes, especially when combined with the reccommended chain. It a good lightweight cassette suitable for XC use. If you're planning on free-riding or never bother to clean your drive chain then this will wear quite quickly.
Those who argue that you need one every 6 months - try changing your chain regularly and the sprocket won't wear with the chain - as you're supposed to do!
