| I bought an earlier version of the mule back in 99 and have used it on virtually every ride since. It fits tube, tools, pump, bit of 1st aid, a couple of bars, mobile, digi camera, and light weight wind proofer with a full "tank" - just, so a good all round day pack. After 7 years of use and abuse from all the elements the British weather has to offer, it is still functioning as it should, with little noticable deterioration. The only thing I have swapped is the hydration pack to the omega system which is standard on the newer versions anyway. No trouble with mould, just flush the system with salt water after each ride, rinse and hang in the airing cupboard. In conditions like we are experiencing in 06, any back pack will make for a slightly sweaty back but this has not been excessive of even particularly noticable. One drawback, its shower but not waterproof so everything will get damp if riding in very wet conditions - newer versions may be better. Otherwise I cant fault it, hence 5 rating. |

| The '06 version is improved over the previous models - it seems a good deal tougher. There's a couple of very nice features - the MP3 pocket is great for a digital camera - with practice you don't even need to take the pack off to get it out.
It does still make your back sweat, but less than other backpacks.
It's expensive (very) and it's a pity that the zips aren't waterproof.

| I've got one of the limited edition 4S (four season) Mule - but all that seems to mean is that the tube is covered in neoprene and it comes in a sand brown colour scheme (looks better than it sounds) - other than that it's the same as the regular Mule.
As an all round hydration pack/day sac I'd say the Mule is excellent. It's very well made (zips, materials etc.), comfortable and doesn't make my back sweat at all (so far - not done any really hot days yet). The cargo capacity is enough for an inner tube, some snacks, tools/pump, maps and a lightweight waterproof coat (just) with a full water pack - but I thought it's not quite as spacious as it looks in the photo. There's also a lined pocket with a weather resistant zip for an iPod/mobile phone too. The water sack is robust and has a large screw fit opening, just large enough to get your hand in, but does still taste of plastic a bit. No sign of mold so far though. The angled drink valve is bit of a sod to get through shoulder loops, especially with the dirt cap attached (this maybe on the 4S only though) but is pretty good (fast flowing) to drink from.
All in all a good hydration/day pack, well made and thought out if a bit pricey - hence the 4, rather than five stars. But if you're prepared to spend the extra (over say a Hydrapac) you won't be disappointed. |
