| The 2011 Grim Original took place over the weekend in Aldershot, Hampshire, with over 6,500 people taking on the off-road course over the hills, water filled ravines and rocky trails as used by the British Army at their normally out-of-bounds training facility.
Events Team Manager Simon Cordner reports from two days of camo net carnage and super fun:
A cold winter's morning, rain blowing sideways and so much mud in every direction that even the best 4x4's were struggling to mark out a path through it all. What better thing to do then than don a pair of shorts, some trainers and a woolly hat and run 8.5 miles across the rough terrain to take on the Grim Original 2011.
This two-day event saw over 6,500 people join together in Aldershot, England to run across tank tracks, crater holes, forest and fire-roads for 8.5 miles. What made it worse (or arguably better) is that the whole course is under mud. Not just your average garden mud ... we mean the sort of mud that you trip, fall, sink and indeed swim across! |

With a shorter (but harder) course laid out by John Gladwin and the crew from GRIM Challenge, this year features included a duck pond – full of inflatable ducks, sharks and crocodiles, some camo net carnage – where entrants had to crawl/swim/run under a huge army camouflage net in three feet of mud! And the infamous crater hole – providing everyone with a beautiful ‘bath' just before the finish line.
In a sense words cannot describe how much fun was had by everyone who took part, many of them doing it for some excellent charities and causes from around the country making it doubly rewarding.
CRC special mentions go to ‘The Robot Man' – who spent 40 hours and used 300m of Duc Tape to create an amazing outfit; The two gents in ‘Mankinis'; Super Mario Brothers; The 118 Twins and Sunday's Roman Centurions.
You can see some pictures of the event over on our Facebook page. Stay tuned as we'll have a video edit together soon covering the whole weekend in glorious technicolor (although it was mainly brown and red!).
Some people just love to play dirty! Our thanks to the GRIM Challenge staff and our partners For Goodness Shakes and Mule Bar for their support in helping everyone recover after the race! You can see all the results from the weekend on the Grim website. |
