Avid Elixir 5 Disc Brake - Gloss Black 2012

Power, performance and value: Choose all three. With features that matter, the Elixir 3 offers ambidextrous levers complete with our standout TaperBore Technology™ and convenient tooled reach adjust. Being able to use the adjustable rear banjo to route your housing like the pros, well, that’s just cool. Not all pockets are deep, which is why we don’t consider things like comfort, control and reliability “features” – to us, these are rights of every Avid owner.

Please Note that the levers are different colours for front and rear. The front lever is Grey and the rear lever is Black.

Technologies:

  • Deep Stroke Modulation™: There’s a fine line between braking hard and braking so hard that you lose traction. Deep Stroke Modulation allows riders to perfectly navigate that line and control even the most powerful brakes with finesse.
  • DOT 5.1: Heat is an enemy of any brake system, so advancements in heat management mean advancements in your ride. You see, we found that in our systems DOT 5.1 takes almost 3 times longer to boil than DOT 4, thus allowing flawless fade-free performance in even more extreme conditions.
  • Intergrated Reservoir: With TaperBore Technology™ we’ve integrated the reservoir and master cylinder on our hydraulic disc-brake levers to create a super-sleek (and even lighter) lever design.
  • MatchMaker Compatible: Save weight and clutter on the bar with MatchMaker. This system holds AVID® levers, a number of SRAM triggers and the RockShox PushLoc control—all with one tidy, light clamp.
  • Power Reserve Geometry: At the end of the day, a brake lever simply multiples the force your hand generates (just like the nut cracker). Avid’s Power Reserve Geometry™ represents a way of thinking about the physics of leverage and your hand’s comfort. This philosophy is fundamentally different than others in the business of brakes. Due to pivot placement, physics dictates that with other brake levers your fingers tend to slip off the ends as you pull. Avid is different. We designed our levers with the pivot closer to the handlebar, in fact, closer than anyone else in the industry. The resulting lever movement has less inward travel, an arc that’s closer to your fingers’ natural motion and delivers more force to the brake. The cool part is, every Avid lever has it.
  • TaperBore Technology™: The term “TaperBore” refers to a unique patent-pending closure system in our Elixir and Code levers. It saves weight, looks super-sleek, improves lever feedback and most importantly–gives you more power and control
  • Reach Adjust: When one finger has the power to control your ride, adjusting the levers to perfectly match your unique hands is seriously important—that’s why we put Reach Adjust on all of our levers.
  • Top-loading Pads: When the only thing between you and the trail is bike maintenance, every second matters. With our top-loading pads, new disc-brake pads can be installed without taking off the wheel, working under the caliper or doing any upside-down pad juggling, so you’ll be ready to ride much quicker
  • Tri-Align™ Caliper Positioning System™: Another original Avid technology making your life better—there’s never been an easier brake to install and adjust. With Avid’s Tri-Align™Caliper Positioning System™, aligning the caliper to the rotor literally takes seconds. Just loosen the CPS™ bolts a little, and then squeeze the brake lever while re-tightening the bolts. Perfect caliper alignment- just like that.

Rated 4 out of 5 by 20 February 2013

Rated 2 out of 5 by Useless on DH trails These brakes are great value and work very well under normal braking conditions, however i have recently bought an Orange Patriot and these brakes come as standard. Went out on a DH trail in North Wales nothing super technical and these are just useless. When you pull the lever they are either ON so your wheel slides around or they are OFF so you pick up loads of speed, if your going to fast and you have to apply the brakes your wheels lock up this happened to me on a steep descent and i went over the bars. There is no where near the amount of modulation you get on a hope brake, oh and there is the brake fade after about an hour of riding cheese might be a better subsitute for a braking surface even with the levers fully closed your wheels are still turning, try pumping the lever and your wheels lock up. Then there is the adjustment, you have to remove the lever completely from the bars to adust the reach and bite, tools wont get in there!!! It irritates me that alot of entry DH bikes or FR bikes come with the elixir 5's as standard, hopes are the only way to go! Fortunately Orange are replacing the brakes for me because i was so pissed off with them! To sum up . . . . Buy hopes for DH or FR use. 09 December 2012
Rated 1 out of 5 by Awful I am so dissapointed in these brakes, they are insanely difficult to get running correctly and keeping them running well is even harder, the worst thing is the noise. I am really carefull that I bed pads in properly and clean the rotor regualrly as well as check for warp, but no matter what I do after about 70kms the front brake howls and howls. So far I have tried Organic, Sintered, HS1 180mm and G3 185 mm. Repositioning caliper, roughing pads. Nothing works. It's a real shame as the brake is powerful with very good modulation, but the noise is unbarable and ruins every ride. Can't afford to replace so stuck with them. 15 October 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Decent Good bite but not great bite, original pads could be better but its my 1st disc setup hopefully the new pads i ordered (brake authority pads burly compound) will be better. i got the 180mm version and i had to do sooooooooo much running around for it. when i opened the box the only things i got where the caliper, hose and leaver setup along with bolts, everything else was missing including the mounting bracket for the leaver as well as the caliper. would have givin 4 stars if i didnt have to call back crc 4 times about missing parts. 29 September 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Elixir 5 awesome stopping power I found the Avid Elixir 5 really easy to install with direct mount (also comes with IS mount) onto my Specialized Hard Rock Pro. The cable length was a perfect fit and I liked the easy allen key clicking lever adjustment. I bought Avid Elixir 5 for the front and Avid Elixir 1 for the rear. No regrets at all. You could actually save yourself money and get Elixir 1's all-round as the Elixir 1 are powerful enough but I wanted the peace of mind of the extra stopping power for my front brake. Compared to my previous crap mechanical Hayes So1e brakes these are AWESOME! I can now do full-on proper stoppies. In fact they are so strong they are showing up my suspension as being a bit worn out. 03 July 2012
