The first part of Elixir’s incredible stopping power is Avid’s hallmark, Power Reserve Geometry. We located the pivot colder to the handlebar. In fact, it’s closer than any other brake in the industry. The resulting lever movement has less inward travel and an arc that’s closer to your finger’s natural motion, which delivers more force to the brake with less effort to the rider.
The second part of the equation is Elixir’s super stiff two-piece calliper. Its design and the fact that it uses DOT 5.1 brake fluid, provides more heat resistance for its large, powerful pistons. Better heat management gives you consistent power that never fades.
The term “TaperBore” refers to a unique patent-pending closure system in our new Elixir levers. It saves weight, looks super-sleek, improves lever feedback, and most importantly, gives you more power and control.
Heat is an enemy of any brake system, so advancements in heat management mean advancements in your ride. You see, we found that in our systems, DOT 5.1 takes almost 3 times longer to boil than DOT 4, thus allowing flawless performance in even more extreme conditions.
Tri-Align™ Caliper Positioning System™:
Another original Avid technology making your life better … There’s never been an easier brake to install. With Avid’s Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System, aligning the caliper to the rotor literally takes seconds. Just loosen the CPS™ bolts a little and squeeze the brake lever, while tightening the bolts again. Perfect caliper alignment, and you could probably do it with your eyes closed.
Power Reserve Geometry™
At the end of the day, a brake lever simply multiples the force your hand generates (just like the nutcracker). Avid’s Power Reserve Geometry represents a way of thinking about the physics of leverage and your hands’ comfort. This philosophy is fundamentally different than others in the business of brakes. Due to pivot placement, physics dictates that with other brake levers your fingers tend to slip off the ends as you pull. Avid is different. We designed our levers with the pivot closer to the handlebar, in fact, closer than anyone else in the industry. The resulting lever movement has less inward travel, an arc that’s closer to your fingers’ natural motion and one that delivers more force to the brake. The cool part is: Every Avid lever has it
This is the base model Elixir, but its performance is anything but average. It has the same Power Reserve Geometry and power as any Elixir, but at a no-bells-and-whistles price.

I got these for my Spesh Big Hit and i use them with 203mm front and 160mm rear and they are brilliant. I have never used a brake with as much brute stopping power as these things with perfect modulation. They look brilliant in white too and the split clamp design is great. SRAM have done an excellent job with these brakes and the price is amazing aswell. Only an extra 40 euro for these instead of Juicy 3's, yous be mad not to upgrade.

Fitted the 5s just recently and all I can say is... MINTED. Don't be fooled, these may be the 'entry level' Elixirs but they're first class, unless independent bite point and hose angle adjust are critical to you then you should consider them, they may not be as flashy as their big brothers but they're still quality. First impressions are excellent, very well made and finished, solid without being heavy. Take your time to set the callipers up correctly, Avid's cup and cone washers allow adjustment on all planes, not just side to side, and it's worthwhile to ensure perfect pad alignment and spacing to the swoopy G3CS rotors. Bed them in properly after that, I went for a ride along a local riverside trail and combined some fast start/stops and ordinary braking together with pedalling the bike whilst 'dragging' the brakes for 20 metres or so at a time allowing some heat to build up then allowing to cool, after a bit you'll feel the improvement in power and see the rotors start to polish up. I went for a long run yesterday over miles of varied terrain and conditions and they were excellent, what's more they remained completely silent even when wet and muddy. Add to that the availability of pads and spares, the SRAM warrenty, and the fact that you're buying into one of brakings royal families and you can't go wrong. Buy them.
