In 1910 John Boultbee and his son Wilfred Mason Brooks filed two patents related to improvements in satchels, knapsacks and the like. Both these patents guaranteed more equal distribution of the load over the straps and more stability of the bag whilst cycling. With this in mind we developed our new Barbican Messenger Bag, featuring a shoulder belt which can be easily secured around the waist during the ride.
The belt is the innovative part of this bag. Once adjusted to the desired length, depending on the height and waist of the cyclist, the belt can be kept loose to carry the bag over or across the shoulder while walking. For increased stability during the ride, the belt can be easily fastened around the waist simply pulling the two ends of the belt and locking them at the centre with the “Sam Brown” fixing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Anonymous The bag is very expensive at full price, but I would like to re-iterate that it is a good bag if you are into classic worn-looking stuff. It's easy to rummage around in whilst cycling and keeps contents surprisingly dry under short rides. Fabrication may be hit n miss, I sent my original back due to some poor stitching. The quality of material is good though - I have used this almost daily for nearly four years now and it still works fine with nothing having worn (completely) though yet. I don't use the 'mechanism' much, just removed the leather shoulder pad as the belt underneath gives better gripping resistance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous I have used this bag daily for 6 month and yes there are signs of wear; however, in my opinion the bag looks better now. This bag is perfect if you like the looks of used stuff.
To mention the size, the large one is pretty big, I should have bought the smaller one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Anonymous Quality very disappointing
The Brooks messenger bag is a quite expensive bag. As such, I had expected the quality of the bag to reflect this price tag. No least so due to quality I have come to expect from their saddle product line.
However, it turned out to be a huge disappointment for me. With the first months of use the bag started to show clear signs of wear far beyond normal patina in key places.
In particular the sewing at the bottom of the bag started to come apart. In addition the shoulder strap began to ravel apart.
After 12 months of normal use the bag is in a very poor condition and looks horrible.
This bag is a huge disappointment.
I have contacted Brooks since I feel this is clearly not something a company adhering to quality would accept. However, they have not taken the time to answer my e-mails.
In sum my recommendation is to stay well clear of Brooks bags.
