These bar-top levers are the sensible choice for Cyclo-cross bikes. They are designed to work in-line with traditional drop bar shifter/levers to provide additional braking control position on the top of handlebars. Crosstops are compatible with caliper or cantilever brakes. They are available in two different sizes to fit, 26mm and 31.8mm handlebars.
Cane Creek Crosstop Brake Levers Features:
Machined aluminium lever and bracket (hinged for assembly ease).
Neat 2.5mm hex bolt takes up tolerances in pivot.
Materials: Cold-forged aluminium lever, die cast bracket.
Weight: 96g per pair.
Finish/Colour: Anodized black with laser etched logos.

I just switched from riding a flat bar hybrid bike to a drop bar cyclocross bike for commuting and occasional off-tarmac trips so I added these for a bit of extra peace of mind. They fit the bill perfectly, they mean you can reach your brakes from a really upright position, useful particularly in urban situations like approaching junctions. I think they'll be useful when you need to have your weight further back too, such as descending a steep track where you don't really want to be head-down in the drops. The product is easy to fit and good quality. There is a little rubber grommet included to seal where the cable outer fits, which is a nice touch. The adjusters give you convenient extra place to adjust your brakes too. The lever is a nice shape and can be operated with one finger. Full fitting instructions are included in the pack.
It says in the pack they won't work with V-brakes but they really mean only full-size mountain bike v-brakes. I am using them with STI levers pulling mini V-brakes and they work perfectly as mini-Vs are the same cable pull as cantilevers or calipers. Note these are auxiliary levers that work with drop-bar levers by moving the outer cable, you can't run them on their own.

Have dad these on my road bike for over a year with daily use. Excellent for commuting when you need quick braking and reactions, so much easier to use then drop levers. Only point to note is that it was a squeeze to fit them on as my bars are pretty crowded with lights and computers.

Brought these to give additional braking for my road bike. Easy to fit. Highly recommended. Spent more time trying to threadle a new brake cable through the guide hole in the handle. Should be installed as standard on new bikes.

Bought these for commuting road bike- relatively easy to fit if your cables are not frayed. Perfect for complete control when you need your head up for manoeuvring through traffic/ low speed cycling/ going up hill. They do not interfere with operation of main brake levers. Highly recommended.

These levers are designed to work with Road brakes, using their specific pull ratio (which differs to the MTB pull ratio). You will therefore need the Road version of Mechanical disc brake in order to use these levers (such as the BB5 Road linked below).
