Answer:
Ideally the area of contact width is what needs to be measured. Measure first the width of the tab on the crank spider, the width of the chainring then add 2 - 4mm to account for the flange on the chainring bolt.

For reference the approx sizes are as follows:

Inner Chainring - 6mm
Single Ring (eg 1x10) - 8.5mm
Standard Chainring (Double, Triple etc) - 10mm
Oversize Chainring/spider - 11mm to 15.5mm

From shimano triple to double

I have an slx crankset with 24/32/42 chain rings. I want to remove the 42 tooth chain ring which will leave me with the small and middle chainrings. What chain ring bolt sets will work with the middle ring only?

6.5mm does look close to the right length (I haven't dismantled it to confirm) - are all the bolts diameters the same?

Answer:
Standard bolts all run a 10mm diameter, yes. For a single ring mounted on the outer tabs you can use the Narrow outer bolts linked below.

Answer:
The Shimano M552 crank requires Shimano Non-Drive Replacement Crank Arm Fixing Bolt #Y1F811100. You should be able to source this part via your local Shimano dealer, or with a quick search online.

I have a GAMUT chainring with a Truvativ Descendant chain wheel and it would be nice to have some bling blue bolts on it. I know it requires 9.5mm bolts but in the specs of the on-site bolts it isn't written which size they are.

Answer:
Chainring bolts usually measure 9.95mm approx diameter for the Sleeve bit that fits withing the bolt holes of the Spider/Chainring. Length of single chainring bolts distance between the bolt and sleeve head can range from 7mm – 9mm approx. Chainring bolt diameter sizing should be the same throughout chainsets as there are lots of aftermarket brands that do chainring bolts that do not make chainsets.

You will need to make sure to get some chainring bolts that are long enough for whatever chainring and spider tab thickness that the bolts need to go through.

These below bolts should be long enough for at least a 9.5mm length requirement when fitting a single chainring and spider tabs together.
