Answer:
Yes, the only real issue with chains is to ensure that the chain you are using is the correct width for the chairing/cogs it is being used on. Any 9 speed chain should be ok

This 9-speed chain would work although shifting may not be as smooth as using a slightly wider 8-speed chain.

Answer:
For the most efficient shifting you should use a Campagnolo chain, but you should be able to use certain aftermarket chains as well (such as KMC).

Answer:
You can use any Shimano 10sp Road or KMC 10sp chain, such as those linked below. For a triple ring setup you should opt for the longer version (114+ links).

The 7901 chain has effectively replaced the 7900 and it is backwards compatible; will work with older 10-speed drivetrains.

Answer:
The Shimano MTB 11 speed chains are not usable with road groups and likewise with Shimano road 11 speed chains on MTB groups.
That said, they may work but not as smoothly as the correct chain/groups combo.

Answer:
Ideally you should use the Shimano link pins, but you should be ok to use the KMC chainlink if you prefer. When using quick links, be sure to install them so that the arrow on the surface faces in the direction of rotation of the crank when viewed from the front.

Shimano 105 compatibility

I have an Ultegra group set on my road bike but notice the chain is a Shimano HG CN-5701. Is this Ultegra or 105 quality?
Also, I wish to change my rear cluster from a Shimano CS 570011-25 to a Shimano Ultegra 12-30. Do I also need to replace my chain ( which is not worn) to accommodate the larger diameter of the cluster?

Answer:
The 5701 groupset was part of the 105 model line.

Assuming you have enough links in your chain to run the larger sprocket then making a chain amendment would not be necessary.
