How critical is the diameter?

I need to buy a seat post for a very old Marin Nail Trail. As far as I can work out, it's the 1997 model.

According to specs online, the post I need is 30.00mm. I measured the seat post hole in the frame (using a drop-in seat post hole measuring device) and my measurement is 30.3mm.

Should I stick to 30.00mm according to the spec or get 30.3mm?

Answer:
30mm would be a standard size, and you should find the frame clamps up fine. If the bike is very used, it's possible than continual manipulation of the seatpost over the years could have widened the seat-tube slightly. If in any doubt, have your local mechanic inspect the frame for any signs of fatigue.

Answer:
I have an unused 31.6 mm seat post that (without serious sand papering and grinding down) will not fit into my frame that is a 31.4mm diameter seat post holding frame. So I was going to get a 31.4 mm seat post for that bike.

I have a Giant XTC Advance 2 with carbon frame and 27.2 carbon seat post. At present it feels a bit like a wet noodle. To heck with comfort, I need more track feel. I would like to stiffen this up with an aluminium post (Thompson).Would an aluminium post compromise the carbon frame, one being rigid and the other with a bit of give. I don't want to crack the frame. I am tall so a 400mm post is out to its limit.

Answer:
An aluminium post is fine in a carbon frame (generally) if it is treated correctly with assembly paste to stop and corrosion or galvanization taking place.

Ultimately this question will be best answered (for peace of mind) by the manufacturer who constructed your frame.

Answer:
Despite the fact that carbon frames are sold with aluminum seat tubes, I wouldn't recommend this, as I've seen a Stumpjumper HT cracked by a seat tube when weight was suddenly applied to the saddle, creating a lot of stress by a rather heavy rider.

This was a bad maneuver, however, I think that had a carbon seat tube been used, this would have been prevented due to the similar flex of carbon against carbon, compared to the "more rigid" aluminum tube. Worst case, I think the carbo tube would have snapped instead of the frame.

Fortunately, it was under warranty so he got a replacement.

Answer:
The 2013 version of this frame requires a 30.9mm Diameter seatpost:

(see here - http://lnk.nu/chainreactioncycles.c...)

and a clamp size of approx 34.9mm.

As we are not a Giant dealer we cannot be certain on the clamp diameter but logically this is the size the frame would require.

Answer:
Seatposts vary in size depending on specific model and size of bike; the best option is simply to measure the diameter of the existing post.

Answer:
Not being a Marin dealer I can't be certain, but the spec listed on BikePedia suggests it takes a 30mm seatpost (http://www.bikepedia.com/quickbike/...). You can double check by measuring the frame/ post as shown below, and or contact your nearest Marin dealer who should be able to double check for you.

Trek Top Fuel 8 seatpost diameter?

Hi

I've checked on my current seatpost and can't see a stamp, and I've googled but not found the answer. What is the seatpost diameter for a Trek Top Fuel 8? I want to get a dropper post, but need to make sure it's the right one!

Answer:
We aren't a Trek dealer so I can't be 100% sure and I don't know what year model your bike is. However I have checked the Trek archive for the Top Fuel 8 and all of them were 31.6mm 2009-2011

Answer:
Fairly certain the 2012 Cube LTD Pro ran a 31.6mm seatpost. You can double check by measuring the internal diameter of your seat tube.
