After extensive market research, feedback from commuters all over the world showed us that a new type of tyre was in demand. Our Gatorskin race bike tyre had filled a gap for hardcore commuters but they wanted more; MORE casing; MORE breaker; MORE protection...
Taking the Gatorskin as our base, we've added a third Polyamide layer in the sidewall to make a unique 3-ply casing for the Gator Hardshell.
We've also added a wider Poly-X anti puncture breaker belt under the tread which extends down into the shoulder area for wider coverage.
Continental Gator Hardshell Tyre Hardshell Protection Features:
Aimed at hardcore fast commuters who need the speed of a race commuter tyre (ie Gatorskin or Grand Prix) but bulked out to provide a tougher cross section in case of that unseen pot-hole or scuffed sidewall on the curbs
Currently limited to our new Gator Hardshell tyre - launch Jan 2010
Using a new type of casing design which folds three times from bead to bead to form a 3 ply sidewall (usually 2 ply)
Anti-Cut Duraskin from bead to bead
Extra wide Poly-X-Breaker under the tread extending into the shoulder area
Extra tread rubber / Longer mileage
Breakers Our basic range of tyre also feature puncture protection in the form of either a hardened rubber layer underneath the tread, or a single lightweight nylon belt
Tyres like the "RIDE" series and our UltraSport road tyres feature this technology
Improved sidewall protection
An extremely durable polyamide mesh that protects the extra-fine, high performance casing from cuts, punctures and abrasion
Less than 10g per tyre, Duraskin has a very high strength to weight ratio meaning that cyclists benefit from superb anti tear protection whilst still experiencing lightweight performance from their tyres.
High Tech appearance
You'll know when one of our tyres features Duraskin. The dark brown fabric is applied externally to the tyre casing priot to the addition of the tread in the manufacturing process. This means that Duraskin is teh first line of defence against intrusion, increasing the chances of sidewall survival significantly in the event of hitting a foreign object.
Poly X Breaker:
New processing techniques enable us to improve existing technology resulting in such features like Poly-X-Breaker.
We use polyester as a breaker material and rely on our experience in car tyres to utililize this material to the maximum benefits in cycle tyres.
The advantages lie in the additional crossing of the individual fabric weaves in manufacturing, giving a densley woven seal with minimal space between the threads - result, Poly-X is very resistant to foreign objects without increasing the rolling resistance of the tyre.
Tyres featuring Poly-X-Breaker Grand Prix.
Modelled on our famous Gatorskin race bike tyre
More reinforcement for the modern commuter
Including our Duraskin & Poly-X technologies
All wrapped in a Hardshell

I bought a pair of these after suffering from loads of punctures with the standard tyres that came with my Specialized Tricross and have used them mainly for my daily 30 mile commute through the flint infested Chilterns.
I must admit that I was none too impressed when I got a puncture on their first day out. However, this may have been down to nicking the tube when initially fitting the tyres. They proved a real challenge to get on the rim, which is no fun when you are attempting roadside repairs in the dark and cold.
However, since that first puncture I've covered a further 5700 miles with only a couple of punctures. This has involve numerous miles through woods and along un-surfaced lanes in all weather. I even climbed the Tormalet and Abisque on them and they performed without fault.
They are no high performance racing tyre but what they loose in speed they make up for in not having to stop to repair punctures. Handling is fine but I have had a few 'moments' in the ice and snow (but show me a road tyre that can cope with these conditions).
Every couple of weeks I dig out the chips of flint and fill in any big cuts with a bit of super-glue and they just keep going. Unfortunately, the sidewall on one tyre has just been cut and the tube is poking out so I've had to order another pair. Hopefully the new ones will last a little longer.

Still running a set of these tyres on my colnago and never had a flat tyre after 8,000kms. Well recommended

Excellent tyre for training or racing. This is my second set. First set lasted 5000km. Just keep the pressures above 100 psi. Bought this set in September 2011 and have covered about 800km since. They are perfect on the straights in the wet but once the road gets twisty the tyres become suspect. On roundabouts, overbanding etc they have limited grip, now I know what a Valentino Rossi two wheel drift feels like!

Rated 2 out of 5 by Anonymous two blow-outs
I've been a loyal Conti rider for about 5 years now, but recently I stepped-up from Gatorskin to the Gator Hardshell and two of them have blown-out on me. I inflate them to 110psi, well within the limit of 116psi and both blew without load, just sitting against the wall, one within a few hours if installation and the other a couple months later, hours after a top-up. Both blew where the wire bead is joined to the body. The same tyres on my roadie (folding variety) have not blown out, to their credit.
Both wire and folding have not offered the advanced puncture protection promised either.
I think Continental have a bit of work to do to make these as good as promised. Waste of the extra tenner IMO. I'm pretty disappointed, but I think I'll just go back to the standard (and time-tested) Gatorskins rather than change brands as they served me well for so long.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous Great commuting tyre
I bought these for my Giant Seek 2, which I commute approx 30km a day on, mostly road but some cycle path and a small amount of shingle track (for that reason I got the 28c width). I ride pretty hard - brake hard, corner hard, crank hard, I don't slow down for gutters, curbs, potholes - and these tyres are holding up great. No signs of wear in about 700km, despite the odd skid around corners. The grip in the wet seems fine too, although I'm mindful of possible limitations so I don't push them. I've ridden over heaps road debris, like a whole smashed bottle or a cars headlight and not a single puncture. The vibration is less than a full race tyre due to the thicker contact patch rubber so on coa**ely sealed roads they're quite nice. These are THE tyre for the hardcore commuter, exactly as Conti said.

It seems that no tyre is fully puncture-proof, not even these.
Bought these for use as a quick commuting tyre and they punctured within the first 3 weeks. Sure, it's winter and the roads are cracking up as per normal, but i was surprised that a piece of flint went through the tyre at the main point of contact. Bit disappointed that it's happened so soon.
Very good in terms of rolling resistance, seem to be very similar to the Michelin's i purchased for race bike. Much improved on the rubbish that came with the bike.
I agree with a previous review, that grip is an issue in the wet - watch cornering and man hole covers, and white paint, as I've had several near misses on each...
