Continental Gator Hardshell Road Bike Tyre

The Gatorskin has set the bar for a perfectly-balanced blend of ride quality and long-term durability without breaking the bank. Sharing the bead-to-bead protection of DuraSkin, the Hardshell casing wraps further into the sidewall and an extra-wide PolyX Breaker covers the entire tread strip from shoulder-to-shoulder. Added material under the tread strip not only improves mileage, but lends yet another degree of puncture resistance. More isn’t always better, but in this case – MORE is what you get. The Gator Hardshell delivers!!

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 16 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by No Flats.... Have theses about 5/6months, biking to work every morning. Where I work is in a rough part of town, not uncommon for broke glass etc on the bike lane. Zero flats to date. Only down side these are a slow tyre, these are town only/rough road training. 03 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very good tyres The hard-shells are very good for heavy milage, commuting, winter training etc. The increased cost over standard gatorskins gets you extra rubber so they last longer and have wider puncture protection. Overall good tyres. 08 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great all round tyre Quiet, handles quite well in most conditions though I lost it going around a greasy corner the other day. Seems to resist punctures reasonably well I think Continental have balanced the requirements of longevity, grip and puncture resistance reasonably well. Would be nice if we could get the best of all 3 but that's not likely to occur with current technology. 12 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Commuter tyre for the heavy rider! Gatorskin Hardshell is a top quality tyre and great for the year round commuter! 07 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Tyre I bought a pair of these after suffering from loads of punctures with the standard tyres that came with my Specialized Tricross and have used them mainly for my daily 30 mile commute through the flint infested Chilterns. I must admit that I was none too impressed when I got a puncture on their first day out. However, this may have been down to nicking the tube when initially fitting the tyres. They proved a real challenge to get on the rim, which is no fun when you are attempting roadside repairs in the dark and cold. However, since that first puncture I've covered a further 5700 miles with only a couple of punctures. This has involve numerous miles through woods and along un-surfaced lanes in all weather. I even climbed the Tormalet and Abisque on them and they performed without fault. They are no high performance racing tyre but what they loose in speed they make up for in not having to stop to repair punctures. Handling is fine but I have had a few 'moments' in the ice and snow (but show me a road tyre that can cope with these conditions). Every couple of weeks I dig out the chips of flint and fill in any big cuts with a bit of super-glue and they just keep going. Unfortunately, the sidewall on one tyre has just been cut and the tube is poking out so I've had to order another pair. Hopefully the new ones will last a little longer. 14 April 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Never had a flat Still running a set of these tyres on my colnago and never had a flat tyre after 8,000kms. Well recommended 12 May 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by Punctur Proof Slick Excellent tyre for training or racing. This is my second set. First set lasted 5000km. Just keep the pressures above 100 psi. Bought this set in September 2011 and have covered about 800km since. They are perfect on the straights in the wet but once the road gets twisty the tyres become suspect. On roundabouts, overbanding etc they have limited grip, now I know what a Valentino Rossi two wheel drift feels like! 03 January 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by two blow-outs I've been a loyal Conti rider for about 5 years now, but recently I stepped-up from Gatorskin to the Gator Hardshell and two of them have blown-out on me. I inflate them to 110psi, well within the limit of 116psi and both blew without load, just sitting against the wall, one within a few hours if installation and the other a couple months later, hours after a top-up. Both blew where the wire bead is joined to the body. The same tyres on my roadie (folding variety) have not blown out, to their credit. Both wire and folding have not offered the advanced puncture protection promised either. I think Continental have a bit of work to do to make these as good as promised. Waste of the extra tenner IMO. I'm pretty disappointed, but I think I'll just go back to the standard (and time-tested) Gatorskins rather than change brands as they served me well for so long. 02 January 2012
