Continental Gator Hardshell Road Bike Tyre

The Gatorskin has set the bar for a perfectly-balanced blend of ride quality and long-term durability without breaking the bank. Sharing the bead-to-bead protection of DuraSkin, the Hardshell casing wraps further into the sidewall and an extra-wide PolyX Breaker covers the entire tread strip from shoulder-to-shoulder. Added material under the tread strip not only improves mileage, but lends yet another degree of puncture resistance. More isn’t always better, but in this case – MORE is what you get. The Gator Hardshell delivers!!

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 18 reviewers.
Rated 3 out of 5 by Recommended, but with a warning I've run on Gator Hardshells for four years. They are truly puncture resistant and last a long time, on a variety of road surfaces. Only downside -- and it's a big one since it forced me to no longer buy these -- is they are slightly too small. I always had problems mounting them on my old bike and on the new bike I recently purchased it's the same problem. Impossible to mount these tires without using tire levers and/or damaging the tube. No way to do a roadside fix. My cycling companion also had the same over-tight issue with these tires on his bike. So unfortunately I have to switch to something else (looking into Michelin Pro4 Endurance). 15 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent tire for riding back roads. This is a great tire for chip and tar roads which are full of broken pavement, pot holes and frost heaves. Easy to mount on rim. Very cut resistant from small nails etc. 04 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by No Flats.... Have theses about 5/6months, biking to work every morning. Where I work is in a rough part of town, not uncommon for broke glass etc on the bike lane. Zero flats to date. Only down side these are a slow tyre, these are town only/rough road training. 03 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Very good tyres The hard-shells are very good for heavy milage, commuting, winter training etc. The increased cost over standard gatorskins gets you extra rubber so they last longer and have wider puncture protection. Overall good tyres. 08 February 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great all round tyre Quiet, handles quite well in most conditions though I lost it going around a greasy corner the other day. Seems to resist punctures reasonably well I think Continental have balanced the requirements of longevity, grip and puncture resistance reasonably well. Would be nice if we could get the best of all 3 but that's not likely to occur with current technology. 12 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best Commuter tyre for the heavy rider! Gatorskin Hardshell is a top quality tyre and great for the year round commuter! 07 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Tyre I bought a pair of these after suffering from loads of punctures with the standard tyres that came with my Specialized Tricross and have used them mainly for my daily 30 mile commute through the flint infested Chilterns. I must admit that I was none too impressed when I got a puncture on their first day out. However, this may have been down to nicking the tube when initially fitting the tyres. They proved a real challenge to get on the rim, which is no fun when you are attempting roadside repairs in the dark and cold. However, since that first puncture I've covered a further 5700 miles with only a couple of punctures. This has involve numerous miles through woods and along un-surfaced lanes in all weather. I even climbed the Tormalet and Abisque on them and they performed without fault. They are no high performance racing tyre but what they loose in speed they make up for in not having to stop to repair punctures. Handling is fine but I have had a few 'moments' in the ice and snow (but show me a road tyre that can cope with these conditions). Every couple of weeks I dig out the chips of flint and fill in any big cuts with a bit of super-glue and they just keep going. Unfortunately, the sidewall on one tyre has just been cut and the tube is poking out so I've had to order another pair. Hopefully the new ones will last a little longer. 14 April 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Never had a flat Still running a set of these tyres on my colnago and never had a flat tyre after 8,000kms. Well recommended 12 May 2012

Answer:
The Hardshell version of this tyre is designed for 'hardcore commuting' as Continental put it.

It has more Sidewall Protection and a 3-Ply Casing with the added wider Poly-X anti puncture breaker belt under the tread which extends down into the shoulder area for wider coverage.

If want ultimate puncture protection when commuting or riding around the city; these tyres are a very good option.
