Rated 4 out of 5 by Overall, really good. I do love these pedals, had shimano clips before these and i'm glad i changed. Only problem is recently I came to service them and found that the end cap that peloads the bearing is plastic, not metal. Completely rounded it off, so had to bodge it out and slightly damaged the thread. The new replacement end cap is also plastic, so didn't fit in cause the thread chewed up the plastic. Crank brothers don't do metal endcaps from what i can see so managed to get some superstar 1's for their nano pedals. Fit perfectly. Stick out about a mill nut that doesn't bother me. Can't have damaged the thread as much as i thought. Just wish such an expensive pedal came with metal endcaps instead of cheap plastic 1's. 10 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Sweet spot of the Mallet range The mallet 2 strikes the sweet spot of the range. The Mallet 1 has too much plastics for my liking, and the 3 seems to have the same features essentially (from memory the spring isn't stamped steel). Point is, if you're going for the 3, may as well get the DH which is the ultimate of the range but very expensive. I have a set of DH mallets and the Mallet 2. Both are going strong through intensive use, however only 6 months old. Insanely expensive compared to Shimano, but the action is much better as is the platform. 29 May 2014
18 December 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by So good! I have had a pair of these for over a year, that's about 700 miles, mainly in the mud. The bearings are holding up fine..not a problem here. I wear these on Downhill and all mountain style riding, I can easily clip and unclip, they never ever get blocked. Sometimes I'm too busy avoiding things to think about clipping in and the larger platform means I don't have to worry about being clipped in all the time...so much better than Shimano SPD pedals. 27 September 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Awful bearings/seals I've owned a few sets of clips, and I really like the clipping in/out mechanism of the mallets and they do feel like flats because of the cage. However, the bearings are crap and mine had a lot of play after only a few weeks of on/off riding. Very recently the outer bearing completely disintegrated leading to the whole pedal sliding off the spline. This was only after around 600 trail miles. In short, they feel great, but don't last. 20 June 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by MMMM!!! Nice looking pedal, and when they do work , they work well. Been back to the factory for new bearings within 5 months, and now they've gone again ! And the plastic top caps, are a laugh, they either get stuck in or round competely off ! Come on Crank Brothers, sort it out !! Buy some SPD's if you just want to ride and forget, these aren't worth the extra money. 08 October 2012
Rated 2 out of 5 by Get SPD's As a MTB guide in NZ I need strong pedals, these are not! Bearings replaced after 6 weeks hard riding, no river crossings either. Then second set replaced after 8 more weeks. Going back to SPD, no bling factor like the CB's but they work! 25 April 2012
Rated 3 out of 5 by 2 Right Pedals After reading the reviews and hearing about the 2 right pedals problem, I still ordered a set of Mallets. Both my friend and I received an order of 2 right pedals from CB. CRC was quick to respond and sort the problem with their usual efficient service. A ball ache nonetheless. The pedal look nice and are well made. Lighter than I expected. 12 April 2012

Answer:
The pedals come with a pair of Cleats (the little metal parts which screw onto the sole of the shoe and engage with the pedal) the shimano shoes can accept shimano and Egg beater cleats. fitting them is a real simple job. BTW SPD shoes don't actually come with Cleats, they always come with the pedals or you purchase them separately.

Answer:
Yes, these Mallet pedals run the standard 2-bolt MTB cleat fitting so will work fine with the XC30 MTB Shoes.

Answer:
No, it is not comfortable at all... it is ok if you are working on your bike and want to cycle up and down your street. But on a trail ride the eggbeater mechanism will dig into your foot and be very uncomfortable, and slippy.

Answer:
We would not recommend this pedal being used in a traditional flat pedal manner with a flat soled shoe.

The mechanism for clipping into protrudes and will raise the shoe. Not ideal for grip or comfort.

These pedals are designed with pins for those occasions where you need to get clipped back in but the terrain is a bit rough to find the clip. The pins are a bit of back-up for those loose situations.
