Crud Road Racer Mudguard Set MKII

Mudguards for race bikes with minimum clearance, extended rear guard for full coverage

In response to numerous requests, we have designed longer tailpieces for the rear Roadracer. We have also beefed up the product in key areas to extend the life of the product.

Traditional mudguard construction dictates a sturdy design, with bolted fixing at the brake bridges, and metal or rigid plastic utilised in the main Arc. The principle has remained unchanged for a century or more. The CRUD ‘Roadracer’ concept turns orthodox road mudguard design on its head. We reasoned that if you could ‘float’ the mudguard off the rim, as in the diagram, then you could do away with a lot of the traditional fixings. The ultralight ‘Roadracer’ mudguard (180g per pair) just hovers in place, so there is nothing to rattle or rub. The brushes instantly dampen any road vibrations, settling the mudguard into its neutral central position.

In extensive tests we have failed to wear the pile against the rim, and the friction involved is so light as to be un-measurable. Customers can get replacement pile strips for the cost of a couple of stamps.

Suggested max Tyre Width: 25mm

Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent - But only 4 Stars as fitting takes time, lots of care & patience Reviewing after first 25KM test ride: Excellent product that does exactly what it says. An after market mudguard set for a road racer without the required frame/fork eyelets. But fitting is no easy task. It requires time, care and patience, although no specialist tools or bike maintenance skills are required. My advice is to first watch the video on crudproducts.com, then open the box and figure out which bits of plastic fit together to create the front and rear mudguard. The instructions then make much more sense. Don't be put off by the jumble of cheap looking plastic parts. I fitted both the front and rear mudguard to a Planet X RT-58 Alloy Road Frameset. It took me 2 hrs but I got a perfect fitting with no alteration to the plastic parts. The Crud Road Road Racer Mudguard set is a well thought out product that once fitted looks and works very good. 19 October 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Fiddly and flimsy Bought less than a yer ago for commuting, 20 miles a day no more. They are now broken and have required constant fiddling to ensure they run smoothly. A good idea but poorly executed. Shame - cause I like Mr 'Crud catcher'! 15 September 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Will do the job if you are stuck for clearanxe Had these for the winter bike for 2 winters. Finaly died at the start of 2014. Good for bikes with no clearance but fiddly to use.. Put some superglue or silicone sealant on the plastic nuts/screws as they WILL fall out if you don't. Put some elect tape on the forks / chain stays where the guards arms are attached. They will vibrate and rub though your lovely paint to the frame.. If you have a few more ££ then get some race blades, but if you want the low profile look that kinda blends in then these crud guards are the way to go. 31 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 Crud road racer mk2 mudguard. Very good with 23mm tyres.. Fit racing bikes with limited clearance and work very well. I would not recommend them for use with tyres larger than 23. As one might expect any rubbish picked up by the tyre will cause rubbing but overall they do exactly what a mudguard should. 21 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top guards I've used these all winter and they won't be coming off any Tim soon. I'm running a 25mm tyre and they fit perfect. Not sure if you could run anything bigger. 05 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by
Rated 3 out of 5 by good Looking good and work well, but snowy road didnt work 17 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Do a great job, but flimsy I've had these for one and a half seasons now and am about to order my second set. Fitting was ok but take your time and watch the video. They look great, don't rattle and keep you, your mates and bike dry. BUT - they are brittle. I had to glue the tailfin on the front and back several times and used up my spare fins. This was OK and the guards still functioned well but the rear cut out which the cable tie passes through to secure the guard to the brake block has now worn through. I've tried various workarounds but reluctantly have to give up as the guard has now dropped onto the wheel. I guess £26.99 isn't a high price to pay for one and a half dry seasons which average about 150 miles a week, commuting, training and sportives 12 February 2014

Answer:
The 'Crud Road Racer Mudguard Set MKII' would have a max Tyre Width 25mm so unfortunately would not be suitable for your Schwalbe Tyrago 700c x 37c tyres.

Will this fit my bike?

I've got an old Olimpus racer bike. The tyres are 700x23c, which should be ok. I'm just not sure about the frame. I've attached a photo, but it's basically the old/thin design. Will these mudguards fit? If not could you suggest something on a budget that would?

Answer:
These can be used with cantilever brakes. The brake cable would need to be placed over the top of the mudguard.

Answer:
Not being a Claude Butler dealer I can't be sure but the Trieste appears to use a fairly standard alloy tube section on the seat stay so these Crud guards should be fine, yes.
