Easton EA90 RT Road Wheelset

Improved ride quality, better cornering traction, fewer flats; these are just a few reasons to ride road tubeless. Easton engineers recognized these benefits and saw an opportunity to make a better road tubeless wheel system using some of the technology that’s made Easton’s UST mountain wheels category leaders.

The EA90 RT wheelset utilizes a proprietary rim design that holds a road tubeless bead securely even at pressures less than 100psi and holds an airtight seal between the rim and tire. A 17.5-milimeter internal rim width provides an improved tire profile for added stability and even better flat resistance. We didn’t skimp on details with the road tubeless: The wheels rely on our sealed cartridge bearing R4 hubs, alloy freewheel and Sapim stainless spokes. As with all Easton wheels, the EA90 RT is entirely hand-built and acoustically tuned so it stays straight and true longer.

Rated 4.8 out of 5 by 8 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice Wheels Very plush ride for a bargain with CRC discount. Only problem was rear wheel needed trueing as quite a large kink in it. 2 friends also ordered these & had the same problem. Didn't take much to sort but, not what you'd expect on a £700 set of wheels. Mind you, not bad enough to send back! 01 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great price on Easton tubeless wheels - let down by poor Easton quality control Purchased these as an upgrade for my road bike - tempted in by the great price and the option to run tubeless (being a MTB'er also and loving the convenience of tubeless# The wheels themselves look fantastic and it was easy to mount tubeless tyres on the rims - using the Schwalbe One tubeless and some stans no tubes. Unfortunately Easton's quality control is not that great and the wheels despite being 'acoustically tuned' , etc... from Easton were visibly out of true and so I had to contact CRC before I had even used them. CRC were great and arranged for a LBS to carry out a truing on the wheels which were both 0.4mm out of true - this may not seem like much but when you consider that the industry standard is 0.2mm is quite a bit for a pair of wheels that have a RRP of approx £700. They are now true to < 0.1mm Having ridden the wheels with the tubeless set up for one ride since they have been trued I can say that they are excellent compared to my original set-up - the ability to run the tyres at 90psi compared to the 110psi of my original set-up also makes for a more comfortable ride without losing any speed - in fact if anything these wheels feel quicker as they roll better. It may be placebo effect of shiny new wheels but I am certainly pleased now the original issue is resolved. Will probably report back once I have put more miles on the wheels. Fast delivery as always from CRC but due to the issue over the wheels not being true out of the box meant riding them was delayed by over 2 weeks. Hence only 3 stars for Easton quality but 5 stars for value. Not CRC's fault #their after sales has been great# - but if you are considering buying a pair of these wheels - check them for trueness as soon as you get them out of the box. 05 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wish I bought 2 sets, bring back the discount deal I'm so impressed with these wheels I wanted a second pair but the discount deal had finished. Have used Shimano and Fulcrum and Mavic. I think these Easton EA90 RT perform better than the Fulcrum racing 3's and although not as stiff as the Fulcrum racing 1's they role as quick and with the wider rim actually tuck better into corners. They are a more comfortable ride than the fulcrum 1's. They work fine with the 23C continental GP 4000's but love to try them with 25C and a tubeless tyre. You can use a dura-ace cassette but can still fit the junior cassette onto the std shimano/SRAM free body. I would not pay full (rrp) price for them however. Only small comment is although they were acoustically tuned, the rear arrived not fully true, about 0.5-1mm out. 21 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A revelation in revolution I got the one with the Dura Ace Hubs last year as the Shimano/SRAM ran out. The Dura Ace Hubs can only be fitted with Dura Ace cassettes OR Ultegra 6700. Despite the slight inconvenience ( I can't use my 105 cassette), it was worth the money. Felt very light, and rolled soo smoothly. Picked up and maintained above 35kmh easily (especially if you tailgate a fat bloke) 28 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by High Quality set of wheels My intention when buying these wheels was to reduce the weight and improve the rolling speed over the OEM wheels fitted to my bike. Bought them in one of CRC's sales so they were very good value for money. I have to say the wheels far exceeded my expectations in most aspects... The increased speed was maybe not as much as I was hoping for, but then maybe I was hoping for too much... I paired the wheels with 25mm Conti GP4000S std clincher tyres; so as yet I am not taking advantage of the tubeless capability. The wheels are about 600grams lighter than the OEM wheels they were replacing, so I'm very pleased with the weight saving. The wheels are stiffer and more aerodynamic then the wheels I was replacing, which was very pleasing. One point I wasn't expecting was the improvement in ride quality... These wheels give an amazingly smooth ride. They take away so much road vibration; they make long distances a breeze. 19 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by they are a really stiff wheel !! I bough these wheels at christmas and i've only just put them on for summer. They are really fast and stiff more suited to a heavier attacking rider ! and if you're running shimano as long as you have a 10 speed 105 and above cassette you can fit dura ace fitment as i have !! 16 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 Massive upgrade on stock wheels I purchased this wheel set to replace the mavic askium wheelset that came stock with my bike. I have to say that I was blown away by the difference between them. I was expecting the easton ea90 wheels to be much better when climbing but I'd not realised how much ore comfortable they would be, and how much faster they are on the flat and downhill. Bearings are super smooth and the extra couple of mm in width has made my 23c tures run like a 25c. I purchased the dura ace freehub as the standard sram/shimano freehub wasn't available. CRC staff couldn't guarantee that this would work with the 105 cassette that I was running but thankfully I had no problems. The price I paid was similar to lower lever kyserium wheels but the performance is significantly better. At their current price and with the latest extra 10% off, you'd be silly to look elsewhere. If you are going to buy this wheelset, don't forget to buy yourself a 19th cone spanner. The bearings on the rear wheel needed tensioning slightly when I received them and easton recommend that you need to check this every 1000 or so miles. Very easy and quick adjustment that anyone can make in seconds. 27 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A more comfortable winter ride. I tend to do a lot of cycling on back country roads to avoid traffic but the inconvenience is more dirt, a rougher ride and punctures. So I decided to invest in these Road Tubeless wheels with Hutchinson Intensive tires (the latter apparently used in the Northern classics). They do the job! Smoother over the rough tarmac and so far no flats. Contrary to other reviews I've read, the intensives were not too difficult to get over the Easton rims. I performed the task indoors in the warm, used a 50% mixture of washing up liquid/water and wore gardening gloves to work the tires over the rims. I didn't need to revert to leavers with a risk of breaking the beads. The tires bedded onto rims using a foot pump (didn't need a CO 2 blast) and held the air at 7 bars. I added sealing fluid as additional protection against flats. Please note: the valves that are supplied with the wheels do not have a removable core so I purchased a set of Hutchinson's which allow for easy injection of fluid with a syringe. 04 January 2014

Tyre Size and Type ?

Hi,
I recently purchased a BMC Gran Fondo which comes supplied with these wheels and a pair of 28mm "Continental GP 4-Season 700×28C Folding"...these seem a bit wide for my liking.....would these wheels also accommodate 25mm and 23mm ? Do you recommend any particular brand of tyre which are more suited as these are tubeless wheels ?

thanks,

Answer:
With a 17mm inner rim width these wheels will accept 700c tyres ranging from 25c to 37c without any trouble (23c and 40c tyres would be pushing the limits of the sidewalls, but would likely still run ok).
These rims are happt to run tubeless tyres or standard clincher/tube setups; with the number of tubeless road tyres still in the minority at present, a standard tyre and tube approach is well worth considering.

Answer:
Yes, the 6700 10 spd cassette uses the same alloy carrier as the dura ace so it fits the larger splined dura ace free body. I have actually fitted one. The older CS-6600 does not fit.
BTW, in reverse, the dura ace and 6700 cassette fit the standard shimano/sram free body if you choose to up grade later. Just be careful with the alloy free body marking. This is the main reason shimano went to the deeper spline, due to alloy free body on their wheels. Not an issue with titanium or steel free bodies.

Answer:
Hi,
Yes they are as I first used the conti 4000's on these wheels before I received the Hutchinson intensive tubeless for winter riding. However, the Easton RT wheels are designed for tubeless with all the advantages that come along with them: fewer flats, smoother ride... I'll be ordering Hutchinson ultras (much lighter than intensive) for the summer months.

Answer:
Yes, the use of normal Clincher tyres and tube setup would be fine to use with these wheels.

There is no rim tape included as they are not internally drilled but for peace of mind you could use rim tape if you wish (19mm Rim tape would be ideal).

Answer:
You would be able to use these with standard tubes and tyre setup - all you would need to do is remove the tubeless valve assembly which is secured with a threaded locking ring.

The internal rim itself does not have any spoke holes like a conventional wheelset - the only hole is where the valve comes through. Therefore you would be able to run these without using rim tape either.

Hope that helps
