Rated 4 out of 5 by Jayaen Great sole for mud and wet trail conditions.
I am not an uber hill climber so I love these shoes for those hard off saddle slogs. As a newbie to spd's i like the cleat adjustability and stiffness of the sole.
One negative I encountered is with the nylon lace loops. While tightening the laces, one of the loops pulled apart and is not fixable. I took the shoes to my local shoesmith who put in D rings for better tightening. I think Gaerne needs to rethink their closure system.

I had a pair of Lake shoes for a few years, loved the Vibram soles. Finally found another shoe that has the Vibram sole. Fit is right, nice and stiff with just the right amount of give for walking, and the deep lugs I've been looking for! I should have bought two pair

How true to size are these shoes? I know that Shimano, for example, come up small. I wear 6.5 which is 40 in EU. Assuming are true to size, if want to be able to wear thicker socks (not really thick) do I need to go up a size? Thank you.

Gaerne like Shimano are on the narrow fitting side. So you would still need to purchase a size up from your normal just like with the Shimano shoes. Depending on how thick is thick depnds on what size you need. But I'd say you should be grand with one size up.
