Garmin Edge 500

Sharpen your cycling performance with Edge 500, a lightweight GPS-based cycling computer for performance-driven cyclists. Loaded with data, Edge 500 tracks your distance, speed, location and elevation with high sensitivity GPS. Add an ANT ™ compatible heart rate monitor, speed/cadence sensor or compatible power meter for a finely-tuned analysis of your ride.

Jumpstart Your Training: The Edge 500 attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike with its low-profile bike mount. The Edge attaches easily to the mount with a simple quarter-turn. When you're ready to ride, just power on your Edge, acquire GPS satellites and go. Edge 500 features a high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix™ satellite prediction to calculate your position faster.

Get the Data You Need: During your ride, Edge 500 measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 500 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation.

All Edge 500 versions work with third-party ANT -enabled power meters to display your power output in watts as you ride. This valuable data shows you how hard you're working, regardless of conditions affecting your ride, so you can train smarter. Some versions also ship with a digital heart rate monitor and speed/cadence sensor.

Other helpful training features include a Courses feature, which helps you compare successive rides over the same route, as well as Auto Pause, Auto Lap and temperature readings. Edge also alerts you if you’re moving but the timer is not running.

Track Your Heart Rate: When paired with a Garmin heart rate monitor, Edge 500 tracks heart beats per minute and uses your heart rate for advanced calorie computation, so you know how many calories you're burning. Train in a certain heart-rate zone to improve your fitness level or compare your pace and heart rate to past performance over the same ride.

Analyze Your Ride: Once your ride’s done, connect Edge 500 to your computer with the included USB cable to analyze your performance. With a simple click, you can join a worldwide network of cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts through Garmin Connect™, a one-stop site for data analysis and sharing.

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 32 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent GPS Only used this a few times so far, but its never lost the signal. Takes about 30 seconds to acquire the signal in the first place. Easy to set up, and easy to read on the move. Lots of different functions if you want them. Easy to download onto your Garmin account. Feels well made. 26 March 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 Lots of useful readings but loss of GPS a problem Pretty good product with alot of useful readouts that can be placed on the main screen wherever you want. The major drawback that i had id that it loses GPS signal in built up areas and tree cover etc. Speed reading became VERY eratic, i even sent the original one back, but the new head unit had exactly the same problem ?! no idea why this happens and Garmin Support could shed no light on it either, just kept telling me to to perform a Master Reset ?? This never once helped. Gave up in the end and brought a different unit altogether. Shame, because apart from that, it was excellent ! 27 December 2013
Rated 2 out of 5 by Over rated and under performs Had this product for nearly one year now. It has been returned to the manufaturer no less than 4 times. Terrible after sales service. Significant issues with GPS (time to find and repeated dropping out). Auto-pause function (which is probably related) often kicks in for know reason when you are streaming along. Records erratic speed bpm whihc distorts your stats. Limited memory for courses. Would never recommend this to a friend or an enemy. Can't think why people rate this product so highly 22 May 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Brilliant I bought this with a heart rate monitor strap and have been really impressed. The display can be configured to show what I find useful. It gives an os grid reference so it acts as a handy navigation tool when combined with a map so it is great for mountain biking off the beaten path. Uploads to strava are simple - yes you can always use a free app if you have a mobile phone (but I don't). Strava has given an extra twist to rides out. I'd buy another if I broke it. 04 July 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome gadgit I have been using Polar heartrate monitors for over 20yrs and thought its time to try something different.....why i hear you ask, well i looked at the Garmin 500 after reading a few reviews and i liked the idea of being able to race against yourself over courses you have ridden previously. Handy if you train alone alot of the time and need a bit of motivation. Well i ordered my Garmin from CRC and while waiting for delivery i checked out the Garmin website and forum............after reading some of the threads on the forum i was thinking to myself "had i made a bad choice" tales of not getting the cadence and speed sensor to work, difficult this, difficult that. Well my Garmin arrived,it was so easy to fit and set the speed and cadence sensors, easy to set up rider profile, easy to set up bike profile for each of my bikes i just could not see what so many people find difficult. Just read the manual which comes on cd and you should have no problems. As for the Garmin out on the trails and roads....................perfect. First time out i did have to much info on the screen which made for difficult reading (i had the maximum possible)but changed the amount of info for the next time out. Downloading all the info from the ride is so easy and straight forward. Once downloaded the information available is easlily readable and to compare with previous rides. I think this is going to be a long and loving relationship. 14 November 2011
Rated 1 out of 5 by No AC charger for Australia in box. Waited for my new Garmin 500. When it arrived I was a lll excited until I opened the box and found that I did not receive a AC charger for Australia. I wish this had been indicated at the time.....I would have arranged to purchase one at the same time. 02 November 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Garmin Edge 500 I was in the market for a GPS training tool and having not owned GPS before, I liked what I saw with The Garmin Edge 500. The slick small design is great on the stem of my single speed and I love nothing more than using the edge 500 to log all my training stats and reviewing them all when I get home. Coupled with Garmin’s online tools it is a fantastic combination and a great way to share epic rides with your mates who coudn’t come along. There are so many features that I haven’t even touched on yet but the basics are really solid. My only criticism is the side buttons are a bit clumsy but once you are used to them they are actually not that bad. The twist lock system is very robust and a very quick way of getting the unit on and off the bike. Overall this was fantastic unit and well worth the purchase when in the market for a smaller GPS unit. 12 September 2011

Answer:
The Edge 500 records your ride data which can then be uploaded to Garmin Connect for analysis, but it does not support on-screen mapping so you can not add/ upload maps or course info to it. For this ability you will need the Edge 800 or 810 series..

Answer:
I don't beleive you can upload routes to this model. I think you have to buy the 800 series in order to do that.
