I would like to know if there is any compatibility issue with using a Shimano Deore XT rapidfire 10sp shifter and XT rear mech with a Tiagra 10sp cassette?

I was trying to measure the spacing between the cogs on an XT 10sp cassette vs a Tiagra 10sp cassette, and I couldn't quite tell the difference. So I was wondering if it was compatible. A friend advised that the cable pull ratio is different between the road and MTB shifters.

My present flat bar road bike has entry-level Shimano shifters which don't shift so crisply. Able to get my hands on a Deore XT set, hence the question.

Answer:
Yes, the Road cassette is perfectly fine to run with the Mountain derailleur and shifters.

The cable pull is in fact different between the Road and Mountain drive-train's but at 10-speed level, this does not effect cassette compatibility as the sprocket spacing is the same.

Answer:
No problem with compatibility. You can mix Sram and Shimano road cassettes with their MTB equivalent/ They are not as beefy and tend to be lighter than the MTB versions. I have used them for years. They wear out just the same as its the same material, its just that there is less of it. I suppose they make MTB cassettes tougher to accommodate the rigors of off road riding. Just look after them and they will look after you.

Answer:
You can use any 8sp MTB Shimano shifter, such as the Acera M360 below. You could also use a 9sp MTB shifter; you would end up with one redundant click on the rear shifter.

If your using it with a 9 speed cassette you may get away with it. If your using it on a 7 or 8 speed then no is the answer.

As long as the derailleur is also intended to be ran with an 8-speed drivetrain then this combination would be fine.

My rear SRAM XX shifter is broken. If I replace them with Shimano shifters, will that work with a SRAM XX rear derailleur or is the shift pull a different length?

Due to the variation in cable pull ratio; Shimano and SRAM Rear Derailleurs/Shifters are not compatible.

An X7, X9 or X0 model would be the better option.
