Energize, Sustain, Recover—GU's formula for success.
Launched in 1991, the world’s first energy gel is still the most efficient sports fuel available today. GU’s patented carbohydrate blend delivers high-quality, easily-digested and long-lasting energy for athletes in every sport and at all levels. Our Berkeley-based sports nutrition company started with original GU Energy Gel, a revolutionary and more effective method to keep athletes fuelled during exercise and speed their recovery from exertion. Today thousands of elite athletes and millions of endurance enthusiasts around the world agree: GU works.
A shot of fast-acting natural fructose (fruit sugar) goes straight to work building your energy levels back up while the maltodextrin is quickly absorbed and sent to your muscles. Vital electrolytes keep your blood chemistry in line and hydration levels stable. Calcium keeps your muscles humming and caffeine adds an extra kick to your power.
Complex carbs in the form of maltodextrin (70-80% of the complex/simple carbohydrates blend) help you maintain glucose levels over time. Citrates (potassium citrate, sodium citrate and citric acid) help speed the conversion of these carbs into energy molecules and mitigate performance-sapping acid build-up in muscles. Branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) leucine, valine and isoleucine, serve as another fuel source, aid in recovery and can improve mental performance and reduce fatigue by limiting the central nervous system’s production of serotonin. Histidine, an essential amino acid, acts alongside the citrates as a buffer that helps neutralize lactic acid build-up in muscles.
Antioxidant vitamins C & E defend muscles from assault by free radicals. Chamomile works as an anti-inflammatory during and after exercise. Ginger soothes the stomach. Sea salt supplies a host of minerals.
The world’s first energy gel is still the most efficient source of premium fuel available to athletes today. The original idea behind GU was to find the quickest way to deliver an appropriate amount of calories to an athlete during competition without upsetting his or her stomach. Since then, the formula has been tweaked and upgraded to take advantage of feedback from GU’s elite athletes and the latest scientific discoveries. In addition to supplying the body with high-quality calories and electrolytes to keep it going, GU mitigates the energy-sapping effects of lactic-acid build-up, optimizes energy production, aids recovery by replenishing muscle glycogen stores and allows for greater mental focus through delayed onset of fatigue signals from the central nervous system. Yep, that’s all in one packet of GU.
Maltodextrin & Glucose: GU’s Carbohydrate Formula for Success
GU provides athletes with a shot of 100 calories in the form of 70-80% maltodextrin and 30-20% fructose (The ratio depends upon the flavor.). Why maltodextrin? It’s a complex carbohydrate, and studies have shown that some complex carbs are actually digested faster than simple sugars like table sugar and honey. This matters because the quicker your body can tap these carbs, the less blood needs to be diverted away from your muscles to the stomach to digest them. This benefit also comes into play during recovery, as a packet of GU eaten just after exercise goes straight to work replenishing your muscle glycogen stores—the energy source first tapped by the body during intense physical exertion. Fructose is the principle sugar in fruit, and we use it because your stomach processes it faster than the maltodextrin, yet it doesn’t produce a sugar high like you experience with simple sugars. We don’t use more fructose because too much of it can upset your stomach and draw precious blood away from your muscles. Fructose also enhances the flavours—it’s what makes you crave GU. But we don’t make it too sweet. That’s because studies have shown that our mouths become highly sensitive to sweet tastes after extensive exercise. As a result, what tasted sweet at the beginning of exercise will, two-plus hours later, taste overly sweet and become unpalatable. GU, on the other hand, will taste perfect, which means you’ll continue to eat and keep your body fuelled.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Graf Excellent taste (Vanilla) - quite thick though!
I had muscle cramp when i entered an event earlier in the year and decided I should be getting more into my nutrition needs. So I started looking at Gels and most of them were quite sickly/sweet - sweetie styled. I tried the Vanilla Gel from GU and must admit it is a lovely taste. It is slightly thick on delivery and also if you get any on your bends, it is quite sticky. Make sure you have water to wash it down with.
Read the nutritional stuff for yourself to make sure it matches your dietary requirements.
I carry a small plastic bag to place expired gels so they don't mess my backpack up with sticky residue, and the plastic bag can be thrown in a bin at the car park at the end of the trail.

These are amazing. When your a little low on energy, these are the perfect pick me up. And the Chocolate versions are more-ish (if a little sickly) . Luckily the sachets aren't too big, as these are extremely rich. You do really need a drink when you have these.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous Tastes great, good energy hit!
Finally I found a gel that actually tastes great! I have the chocolate flavour and the peanut butter flavour. I love both! They are a bit thicker than any powerbar or SIS gel, but they taste 100 times better. I usually drink water with my gel anyway (even if I don't have to) so the thickness didn't really prove to be a problem for me. I now don't have to force myself to eat on the bike! Can't wait to go riding again and try all the flavours.

Purchased the chocolate outrage and vanilla bean flavours of these.
Taste is beyond anything that powerbar, clif of high 5 have to offer.
Im not a chocolate flavour fan but the gu chocolate is very nice on the palate.
As for the vanilla it is lovely with a slight taste of coffee in the mix, have to say these are a good bit thicker than any other gel that ive had so probably best suited to cycling as water is a must.
