It has to be compared to the benchmark Avid BB7. I think the BB7 is slightly better in terms of performance, it is lighter and both pads can be adjusted. The CX-5 has only one adjustment mode for the inner pad and it is heavier. However, changing the pads on the BB7 is a right pain in the neck... spring, retaining clip... all those things require fiddling and sometimes the retaining clip does not want to go back in place. The CX-5 has magnets and swapping pads takes 2 minutes with no hassle. The original pads are OK, but a set of organic Swisstop (model D 19) would lift the caliper on pair with the best mechanical calipers out there.
SO, BB7 for performance, CX 5 for maintenance and if you want to swap pads for different conditions

Thought I might not enjoy these as much as my long standing Avid BB7s (the standard for mechanical discs) but, I haver to say they are nice to have on my new cross bike...maybe slightly heavier than BB7s but very easy to adjust and the feedback/spring return is heavier than a BB7, which means when you get mud and other junk in your brakes they are less likely to grind or rub on the rotors as the pad return is not easily overcome. I am happy with them (until someone puts out a titanium mech disc:)
