Hope Pick N Mix Headsets - Bottom Cup

As you might have worked out by now, headsets are a bit of a minefield! Integrated, integral, reducers, dimensions and types all contribute to confusing the situation. Don’t panic! We have now made top and bottom cups available separately allowing our headsets to fit almost any frame and fork combination. Hopefully this brochure will help you through choosing the right headset for your bike.

A couple of things to remember though - we don’t necessarily do a headset to fit your bike! We have 4 ‘off the shelf’ combinations and a further 18 ‘Pick n Mix’ options. There are other styles, types and fittings out there. The first thing to remember is that you need accurate dimensions if you are at all unsure of what type you need.

The second point to remember is that unfortunately there is no ‘standard’ - OK, we have the dimension 1 1/8”, which covers the majority of headsets now, but as far as Integral, integrated etc...these are simply terms used by different manufacturers to determine what they consider that style to be. Measure, check and measure again!

One thing that is common throughout our range is the quality of materials used to manufacture them, here in our Barnoldswick Factory, the quality of the custom made stainless steel bearings and the time taken to hand assemble each and every one before it leaves, on its way to you!

Options for Bottom Cup:

  • Steering Tube Size: 1.1/8" or 1.5”
  • Style: Integral, Integrated, Traditional

Rated 5 out of 5 by Such A Fantastic Idea Well Done Hope I have a really awkward Headset size and couldent find a headset that came in the right size out of a box. Hope have really struck a goldmine (again) here with another simple idea. Products came, fitted perfectly worked perfectly and looked good. Basic Hope product does everything well while looking good :D 13 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quality Hope products I am a big fan of hope and never had any problems with any product by them. Pick n Mix is a great idea and made it so simple getting the right headset. Shame you cant get colours but the Black looks great on my bike. The bearings are very good, really smooth, and the quality of production is spot on. 30 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great bit of kit Lots of options and really saved me a lot instead of having to buy an entire new headset, paired with 1.5-1.1/8 reducer cup I had my new Kona Operator up and running in no time! Super quick delivery as usual from CRC 27 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lets my bars turn. This is a good headset, it is well made as are most hope things. I've run hope headsets for many years in many different bikes, mostly my premium builds (FSA is good for the cheap jobs). Went for a zero stack (integral) for a lapp. Went in easy peasy with the x tools press. 20 December 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Hope again and again!! Another great product from hope that does what it should, as always the price could be lower but thats just life as a mountain biker!! 21 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid easy to fit bottom cups. Used the H type bottom cup for a 1.1/8 conversion to 1.5. Easy to install press fit, good seals on the bearings. Only downside is a bit pricey for just the bottom cup, that said it is from a top brand. 23 October 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Highly Recommended - Silky Smooth Feel I recently replaced the stock headset on a Lapierre Zesty 314 with this Hope kit. Its buttery smooth and has given a quality feel to the steering feel. Highly recommended! 16 January 2013

There is a Hope headset that will fit your frame but you need to know the size/diameter of your headtube in order to get the correct headset that will fit.

For running a 1 1/8" steerer a Type 4 Upper (sku269848) and a Type F Lower (sku269856) with the Hope Reducer (sku273357) would be an ideal setup to retain the frame geometry.

Answer:
An integrated headtube runs a 41.8mm internal diameter, which is too small to allow the fitting of a headset and a tapered steerer fork. There are no suitable headsets to match these two standard together that I am aware of.

My existing headset is FSA TH-888. is this a traditional headset or same as conventional headset?

Now. i'm going to install a tapered fork, will you recommend a bottom headset to convert the existing headset? But i think EC44/40 would be okey. And, if you have a better option kindly please advice.

Answer:
From the information you have supplied regards your current headset then unfortunately you will not be able to fit a tapered fork to your bike.

To fit a tapered fork to your bike your headtube needs to be what is called an Oversize Headtube with a minimum bottom cup diameter (bottom of your headtube) of 44mm (43.95 to be exact) to be able to accommodate the tapered section of the steerer tube.

The FSA TH 888 headset only has a bottom cup diameter of 34mm which is also the size of the bottom of your headtube.
Given the difference between the two sizes it will not be possible to fit a tapered fork to your bike.
This is a common problem on a lot of bikes.
