Hope Retainer Narrow Wide Chainring

The new Retainer Ring is designed to work without the need for a chain guide (with the use of a Clutch style rear mech).

No need for heavy chainguides, noisy drivetrain and drag. CNC machined 7075-T6 aluminium provides the perfect blend of light weight and strength.

The chainring is compatible with 9spd, 10spd and 11spd set ups. A hard anodised finish makes these ultra durable and increases longevity. Available in 104mm PCD, 4 bolt fitting.

Features:

  • 104 PCD 4 bolt pattern
  • No need to run chain device

Rated 4.9 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Not had a dropped chain yet! Works perfectly with Shadowplus mech, not had a dropped chain since fitting. Good range of sizes and colours. 15 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by excellent hope quality Partnered with x9 type2 derailleur never dropped a chain since fitted and I have tried 02 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Perfect setup for 1x10 without chain keeper Set up on a '12 Camber Elite, initially with an e-thirteen chain keeper but due to the frame / direct mount interface not being perfect it always caused rub issues so I dropped it from the mix. Running with an XTR clutched rear mech, on an 11-36 10sp I have yet to drop a chain after 3 months. Was interesting that the 30 tooth has milled threads for bolts, while the larger sizes don't (and require shorter chain ring bolts#. You can also swap the 32 + sizes without removing the cranks #at least on XTR's# which is handy. Have been swapping between 30,32,34,36 depending on the terrain #and fitness) and all proved faultless. 29 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Rock solid Running the 32 tooth with a 11-36 shimano cassette and clutch derailleur. I've mounted it on a XT 2x10 crank - this would be the smallest ring you could run on these cranks I imagine. Stoked with the performance. So quiet and smooth compared to using a chain guide. I've had a few encounters with rocks - but no damage done - it really is very tough. Have lost the chain a few times (once every 2 rides?), but way less frequent than if you were using a front derailleur or didn't have wide narrow. 23 September 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Value for money Light weight, never drop chain ever since fixed on the bike. highly recommended. 16 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good Wide Chainring. Replaced Surly on Hope, wear is not observed (3000km), chainring very light, excellent quality, everything is super! 11 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top notch Does what it says. Not dropped a chain yet. Good buy 03 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great chainring Not the cheapest but did excatly what it's meant to and didn't drop the chain on recent trip to the Alps. Having the thread in the chainring is a great feature and fitted easily to my current 9 speed SLX triple. Coupled with a new XT medium cage rear mech with clutch has significantly reduced clatter at the back on my bike! 26 August 2014

Answer:
Yes , you would need a 9 speed chain if running 1x9 and likewise an eleven speed chain for 1x11 but if you are running 1x10 then a 10 chain is required

You will need outer bolts to link a ring with a bash (same principle as running a double or the outers on a triple).
