Hope T-Rex Expander Sprocket

The Hope T-Rex ratio expander allows you to upgrade your existing 11-36 10spd cassette to give an 11-40T range. The T-Rex simply installs behind your existing cassette and replaces one of the smaller sprockets, usually the 17T.

Shimano and Sram specific 40T sprockets have been designed, this gives us the following benefits which wouldn’t be possible with a larger sprocket size or with a universal type design…

Features:

  • Precise matching of the tooth profiles and shifting points specific to each cassette
  • Perfect mating of supporting tabs reducing flex and aiding shift performance
  • Lower B-tension adjustment is needed ensuring good shifting throughout the cassette range compared to fitting a 42t
  • Shimano version compatible with XT and XTR 11-36 10spd cassettes
  • Sram version compatible with PG1030, PG1050 and PG1070 11-36 cassettes
  • 7075-T6 aluminium
  • CNC machined in Barnoldswick, England

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 19 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Well worth it on a 1x10 setup where uphills are steep Piece of pie to fit with my XT cassette, had to do a fair bit of adjustment on the SLX derailleur B screw to clear the cog but works perfectly. Is a godsend on my 1x10 when riding on some of the hillier parts of the south coast (Purbecks and South Downs). Some people complain about the gap caused by removing the 17T but I've not found it an issue. 15 October 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by pretty good works on zee mech (11-36 teeth)!! bit to low gear needs a big hill to use it with otherwise too light. gold colour looks great lets others know your sersious about mtb haha! yet to see the long term durabitity. bit pricy but cheaper then upgrading to sram 11 speed 14 October 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by This product has great features Speedy delivery as always. Great product at a great price! Thanks CRC 08 October 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Easy to fit and use but wears quickly this makes life easier on the climbs and is easy to fit and shifts smoothly.Mine has worn very quickly. I fitted it along with a new chain and after the first signs of chain stretch I fitted a new chain and it works well on all rings but the Trex which slips. Seeing as the trex costs more than a whole XT cassette I think this is poor value Two chains to a cassette is fine but two trex rings as well makes it a very expensive upgrade. 30 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Who needs 1x11 when you have the T-Rex I went 1x10 w/34t FC + 11-36 / 40T T-Rex and love this setup. For Ontario, CAN trails, it's insurance. I've yet to tackle some of the larger hills, but 40T is perfect. It was recommended to me over the 42T because the XT M786+ just clears it with the OEM b-limit screw almost all the way down. But Hope includes a longer one just in case. Very nice. I did remove the 17t cog as instructed and shifts perfect. No hunting or mis-shifts. Shifts to and from the T-Rex are crisp. I got the silver and there is a slight colour difference but in terms of size, the T-Rex looks like it belongs on the cassette. 30 September 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great design, but not as smooth as required Had been running the T-Rex for around 3 months now, in and around Melbourne / Victoria's trails. Setup, XTR cassette, replaced the 17t with a 16t, and dropped the 15t out all together to smooth out the ratios. With the recommended dropped 17t still had the same issues. With an XTR clutched long cage, it never changed perfectly smooth. From what I can see its mainly due to the lack of chain wrap in the smaller gears. Having to wind out the B tension enough to (just# clear the 40t sprocket meant very little wrap on the bottom three cogs, so could skip the first few ramp passes - especially in muddier conditions. Always seemed to coincide with a poor gear selection on initial climb ... the panicked gear drop while under some tension. It was still useable, but no where near as smooth as running without it so until the M9000's are available I've instead dropped a few teeth down on the front chain ring #Hope W/N ring which are fantastic sans chain keeper !). Would recommend it still, but with the caveat that it may not be as smooth as running without. First 50km run this weekend so hopefully can get up the hills still. 29 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A godsend on lazy days Bought this product as I enjoy riding in the Peaks but some of the climbs were difficult on my standard 2X10 setup. When it arrived it took about 10 minutes to fit and 5 to set up. I have a long cage xt mech and the b screw was easily long enough to make the adjustments I needed without using the supplied screw. I removed the 17T sprocket to accomodate this and I haven't missed it at all. The climbs are a breeze (I don't race up, I'm just happy to get up) and it doesn't tire me out enabling me to enjoy the rest of my ride. When I'm having one of those "I'm just not up to it" days the T-rex makes it easier to just keep going. Excellent bit of kit. 25 September 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Quality from Hope again I first purchased the e thirteen 42 tooth cog and have found that very temperamental and needing set up after every ride. This version from Hope has been very smooth and took no time to get fitted and working it also puts a lot less load on the rear mech. Riding the two I've found no major difference in the two gears and would recommend the Hope between the two. 10 September 2014

Answer:
These extender rings are designed for use on a 1x10 or 2x10 setup; you would need a very long chain to suit a 3x10 setup with this ring, and may have trouble taking up the slack when dropping onto the smaller chainrings. It would not be suggested for use with a triple setup.

Answer:
This product is really aimed at riders using 1x10 gearing, I have never seen it used on a 3x setup before. In theory it should work, but I'm not sure how smooth the shifting would be in some combinations.

Answer:
This sprocket is compatible with the Shimano M980 and M771; also SRAM 1030, 1050 and 1070 cassettes.

A longer chain may be required but in most cases the derailleur will handle the chain movement without any issues (note that the derailleur must have at least a 29tooth capacity). The wide ratio/Freeride variant of this derailleur has a max capacity of 36tooth and can run this expander sprocket.

I have a short cage XO 10 speed rear derailleur and am running 1x10.
Is it possible to fit a 40T T-Rex expander sprocket or do I need a medium cage to achieve this?

Answer:
It depends on the chain growth of your frame; a short cage derailleur should work on the 40t ring (42t will always require Medium Cage) as long as the frame has less than 25mm of chain growth.

To check the chain growth of your suspension ask the manufacturer or follow the steps below
- Measure the distance between the rear axle and crank axle.
- Deflate the rear shock and cycle the suspension to find and measure the spot in the travel where this distance is the longest
- The difference between these numbers is the chain growth of your suspension

Personally, I would err on the side of caution and move up to a Medium Cage derailleur anyway.

Answer:
It has been made to work, but some examples on the internet have had to use a longer B tension screw to get it to work properly. But you get different answers from different sources. Sorry I cant be more specific.

Answer:
The Wide Ratio (Free Ride) version of the Zee M640 has ample capacity to run this sprocket assuming that a front chainring no larger than 32tooth is being used (ideal).

For the frame on which is it being used; no longer than 25mm of chain growth is ideal.
