İ have Shimano m-411 triple crank 28x38x48, 8speed. İ would like to fit a 26t inner ring, would a 9sp ring be ok, or could you recommend one?.

Answer:
Chain fitment is calculated by determining the Bolt Circle Diameter (B.C.D.) then the spacing of the chainring.

Answer:
The bolt circle (BCD) refers to the distance between the bolt holes on the chainring. This is important as chainrings and cranks can have different bolt spacings.

The way to identify your current crank/chainring BCD is to get a ruler and measure the center to center of two adjacent bolt holes.

45.3mm measured will equal a 64mm BCD the most common for 22t size.

Answer:
Sorry for any confusion caused.

There is a small formula for working out a BCD from the actual bolt hole distance dimension (in this case the number you have measured is 45.3mm..

Multiplying this dimension by 1.701 will give you the actual BCD for a 5-bolt chainring.

Use 1.155 for 3-bolt chainrings, 1.414 for 4-bolt chainrings and 2.000 for 6-bolt chainrings.

So by multiplying 45.3mm by 1.141 will give the 64mm BCD required for the 4-bolt chainring required.

Answers

Answer:
Different chainset gear ratios seen on Triple or Double standard or compact chainsets will denote the overall gearing feel of your drivetrain along with the cassette ratio that you are using. Depending on what your riding style/application is will help determine what gearing styles will be best suited for you.
A triple chainset offers you a different range of most gears when compared to a Double chainset etc.
Normal standard gearing chainsets will have chainrings that have a 130mm BCD usually and have larger tooth counts than what you will see on Compact Gearing chainsets that run smaller BCD sizes of 110mm.

You ideally want to get a gearing set up for chainset and cassette that matches how/what you ride.
