Manitou Marvel Expert Forks - QR - 9mm - Tapered 2012

When you name a fork Marvel, the fork better be marvellous. Manitou did not disappoint with this fork. At 120mm of travel, this fork is a fierce fighter in the XC/ light trail category. Put this on your high end XC frame and be amazed at the difference it will make. Manitou did not just want to make an excellent fork; they wanted to make a statement to the rest of the industry. Not only are bike frames changing but components including forks are too. You’ll notice some striking architectural features on the Marvel including the crown design.

Technologies:

  • ISO AIR: ISO Air is Manitou’s isolation air spring technology. It captures some of our MARS Air System’s benchmark plushness and puts it into an efficient cross-country package. We’ve essentially created a compliant link between the unsprung lower half of the fork and the air piston. The result is a system that isolates the rider from harshness on small, square-edged bumps produced by seal drag, or stiction, common in traditional air systems; the science of smooth!

  • TPC (Twin Position Chamber): Providing 4-Dimensional Compression Damping; The velocity dependant circuit responds to the terrain while the Pressure Dependant Circuit flattens the bumps, the Energy Dependant Circuit activates on big hits while providing unmatched small bump sensitivity and the Position Dependant Circuit creates a bottomless feel.
  • ABSOLUTE+: Velocity/Pressure Dependent System; Compatible with MILO remote lever, Absolute+ Switches between velocity dependent to pressure-dependent based on adjuster position. With an eight-position dial for compression rate-adjustment, it achieves lockout feel at maximum adjuster position, and plushness and control with pedalling efficiency.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Does the job nicely I had a stock Suntour XCT V4 fork on my MTB. While it did work in general, the performance was sufficient only to soften the impact with small obstacles such as medium bumps, small rocks and some roots. Riding fast on a forest trail was possible but neither was it safe nor pleasant (unless you compare it to a rigid fork). The old fork also lacked adjustment and therefore the handlebar would hit my hands on a hard trail while some pedaling energy would be wasted on tarmac. It was also too heavy. So I decided to upgrade the fork. This fork has a tapered tube. My frame has a straight ø1⅛" (ZS, 44mm) steerer tube. I used a Hope Pick'n'Mix bottom cup to fit the ø1⅕" cone into the frame. This added 15mm to the height (actually less because the ordinary ZS cup adds up to 5mm), thus somewhat increasing the angle of the frame. However, I didn't notice any changes in the angle while riding the bike; moreover, the new fork allows more adjustment and is softer, so the angle is hard to measure. Okay, about the fork. It's fantastic. The first couple of rides were a bit disappointing as I was expecting more. Sure, it can be locked with a flick of the finger while riding (no need in "remote controls", BTW) — and voilà, it's absolutely rigid. An obstacle ahead, another flick of the finger and it saves you from a crash. Okay, the air coil can be tuned with a pump to match your weight (especially important for me as I'm skinny so the fork should be more responsive). All this is great and worth the money but... but it's just a fork. It _is_ "plush" and all but you still can feel the bumps. Well, okay, it's a fork. And then I tried some really hard terrain. It was OK: now I could ride over somewhat larger roots and stones, the hands felt better, um... nothing more. So I took a look at the speed. And _then_ I understood how great this fork was. It turned out to be so soft that many obstacles "disappeared" without me noticing it; it's also very predictable so you can trust it and push the limits further without compromising safety. You don't notice the fork being "better", you just go faster and feel fine after a long rough ride. The only touring-related downside is the fender problem. It's no secret that a) only full fenders work propely, and b) proper suspension forks never support them. There are some clever workarounds like Mudhuggers but they won't work with the Manitou's trademark inverted gorilla. However, I found a decent solution, so my Marvel now sports full fenders (and, IMO, they look fine except for the clamps). No good pictures yet, may post them later. 31 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Fork... Although this fork is a couple years old and does not have all the bells and whistles that some of the others now have it is still a GREAT fork.... sometimes simplicity is a good thing. I recently went from a hard tail to full suspension and I did a bit of a mix and match build to fit my budget. These forks were on sale and were a fantastic bargain to complete my bike. Completed the build and have a few shreds on it so far.. this fork is awesome... it was simple to set up and make adjustments, is as smooth as butter and is soaking up everything that my poor choice of lines have thrown at it plus it looks good. Great choice if you don't have to have the latest and greatest stuff out there. 26 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by A very strong & plush fork with great finish, at an affordable price I don't know why Manitou Forks are so underrated. Finding reviews on the internet is such a pain. This fork is GREAT. Smooth, very plush, almost no stiction and very tough. Felt the comfort immediately when I got on my bike. The feel is instantaneous, my handlebar vibrates alot lesser on the trails and is sensitive to small bumps and absorbing huge ones. With user-friendly knobs such as the lockout and rebound settings, it's easy to use, just plug and play direct from the factory. Though it is meant for XC riding, I use these on harsh trails yet I feel comfortable. With a tapered headtube, I have more control and this definitely boost my confidence on the trails. This is comparable to higher end forks such as at Float or a Reba. MUST BUY! 24 November 2013

Answer:
These forks run a Post mount as do the Avid calipers, so you will need a post-to-post 180mm adaptor (+20PM) such as those below.

Steerer length and remote lockout

How long is the steerer tube and does this come with a remote lockout? I want to be absolutely sure before I make a purchase. I own a GHOST SE9000 2012 Hardtail FRAME and was wondering if this could fit. Thanks in advance!

Answer:
An MTB fork steerer uncut is approximately 2600mm. This fork features a fork mounted lockout, not remote lockout.

The Ghost Se9000 has a tapered headtube so this fork will be suitable.

Answer:
As this fork has a tapered steerer it will not be compatible with the Specialized Hardrock Comp.

The below options are worth consideration; it would be advised to not increase the travel to anything higher than 100mm.

Answer:
Not being a Raleigh dealer I can't be sure, but I believe the 2009 Mojave 5.0 runs a standard 34mm headtube for a conventional style headset, so you will not be able to fit tapered forks. You will need to run a straight 1.1/8" steerer fork.

No, the '09 Raleigh Mojave runs a standard 34mm headtube, so you will not be able to run a tapered steerer. You will only be able to fit a straight 1.1/8" steerer fork to this frame.
