11-32 cassettes in 10 speed are available from SRAM and Shimano in the MTB section. Both will be compatible with your shifters.

Answer:
In most cases, No. However, if you have a Shimano 8-speed hub that uses a lock ring to hold the cassette on the cassette body, then there is a chance a 10-speed will fit.
If your cassette body uses a threaded sprocket as a locking mechanism for the cassette, then you are out of luck and need to replace the hub with a later model one.
From my experience Shimano increased the length of the cassette body somewhere during 8-speed production by a very small amount and a 10-speed will fit this type.
The only way to know for sure is to try a 10-speed cassette and lock ring. Good luck.

Answer:
7 & 8-sp. hubs are not the same; 7-sp. has a shorter freewheel body. You can fit a 10-sp. cassette on an 8-sp. hub, but not on a 7-sp. hub.

Answer:
Yes, but check to make sure your rear derailleur has the capacity to handle the extra teeth. You may need to fit a long cage derailleur if the large sprocket in the cassette is significantly larger than your current one.
You may also need some more links in your chain, or as is common when fitting a new cassette, a new chain of the correct length.

Answer:
Yes, the cassettes will interchange fine. You will need to change to a MTB derailleur though; the road derailleur does not have the clearance to fit under a 34T sprocket. Just fitting a long cage version of the road model won't address that.

Answer:
In most cases you won't have a problem, unless your current chain is stretching your rear mechanism to it's limit when in your large chainwheel and 25 sprocket.
At worst, you may need to add a couple of links to your chain.
Of course, if your current chain is worn, it may not run happily on a new cassette, in which case a new chain is required.

8 speed sprockets.

Are Shimano 8 speed sprockets the same thickness as 9 speed ones? Can they therefore be interchanged?

Answer:
Each individual sprocket of an 8 speed is thicker than a 9 speed. The spacers are also thicker, so the overall width of a complete 8 or 9 speed cassette is similar.

Answer:
Yes, 8 and 9 speed cassettes occupy the same width of freehub. The sprockets are the same size (width), but the spacers used may differ between them, depending on model.

Is there a current production 10 speed cassette that is NOT constructed with some sort of carrier?

I'd like to assemble a custom cog set to fit the SRAM/Shimano key way on typical drive shells (Hadley, King, Hope) for DH usage. I'd prefer something starting with an 11t and topping out about 28t, but I only want about 6 or 7 cogs. I'll fill the empty spaces left behind with single speed spacers.

Answer:
Hello, Yes there is a cassette that You can use for this purpose. I have been using "sram cassettes for this very purpose. They are only held together by 3 small threaded pins which can be easily removed and then the cassette can be rebulilt to any configuration that You choose. Just be careful to replace the spacers properly , and it will work.

Answer:
All cassettes are constructed on a carrier.
I suspect that your intention is to create a bespoke cassette with ratios to suit you. Unfortunately the industry is so regulated by the manufacturers that such an idea is impossible.
If you shop around you may well be able to purchase a 7 speed cassette which would have the ratios closer to what you are looking for. Even .....possibly a 6 speed. They are still knocking about in smaller and cheaper back-street bike shops. The large companies will all tell you that you can't buy one because they are not interested in stocking such items.

Answer:
The cheaper Shimano cassettes have individual cogs that can be separated by removing the 3 pins. In this way you can construct a custom cassette, I do it for customers a lot with great success.

Answer:
Thank you for the replies. For anyone with a similar question, it turns out that, indeed, some of the cheaper cassettes are not built on carriers. (Shimano Deore-Alivio HG50 is one such example)

If the photos don't show the details, sometimes the customer reviews will help. When people complain about notching on their alloy free hub body, it's rather safe to assume at least some of the cogs are individual and not pinned to an alloy carrier.

The Hadley drive shell is Ti, where Chris King has a stainless steel option. Incidentally, FYI, I have both, and the splines still look new, so the cassette mangling and notching can be avoided if you're so inclined.

Cheers mates...
