Mavic Open Pro Road Racing Rim

The reference rim for high performance wheel building. Open Pro is the latest version of Mavic "Open" rims, and as such is the most advanced evolution. Optimized up to the limit of material potential, Open Pro is probably the best road rim available.

Mavic Open Pro Road Racing Rim Technologies:

  • Maxtal: Exclusive to Mavic. An aluminum alloy that is 30% more resistant than a 6106 alloy, for lighter and stronger rims.
  • SUP: Soudé Usiné Process. After bending, the rim joint is arc welded. The welded seam is then milled for a smooth finish. A welded and milled rim joint is extremely strong, eliminates shuddering when braking, and offers superior wheel balance.
  • UB Control: Usiné Brut Control. The braking surfaces are milled to improve braking friction and eliminate shuddering.
  • CD: Couche Dure. This process creates a micro surface hardness of the rim. It slows down braking wear and improves its durability.

Mavic Open Pro Road Racing Rim Specifications:

  • Recommended tyre widths: 19 to 28mm
  • Valve hole diameter: 6.5mm
  • Recommended nipple length: 12mm
  • ETRTO compatible size: 622 x 15

Rated 5 out of 5 Nice Solid Rims Good study Rims, looks great even on vintage steel bikes. Good price. 16 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Lightweight but sturdy road rims I built a pair wheels using Open Pro rims which I started using May 2013. They have been used week in week out in all weathers and all through winter, and I haven't had to true them since they were built. In all they have now covered 3500miles and if it wasn't for the pothole I've just smacked @ 30mph in the rain they'd do a few miles more. The brake tracks do look quite worn but are within Mavics guidance of 0.4mm concave, but only just. I'm very heavy on the brakes and over winter lots of wet miles have taken their toll on the wheels. Unfortunately I hit the pothole square on and it dinged both the front and the rear rims, and resulted in a pinch flat in the rear. The rims stayed true but there was a very slight bulge on the brake track on both rims at one point. Polished out the worst of it but there's still a little snag on the rear plus after such a heavy hit I'm erring on the side of caution and rebuilding the wheels with new rims. Not the cheapest but in my experience well worth the money. Unless you're experienced in building I'd recommend getting a spoke tension meter. The first rear I built was a great stiff wheel but I had a really heavy fall on a downhill corner during a sportive (too fast in, rear slide, grip, highside, ouch!) and the wheel ended up like a pringle. A very helpful chap who stopped to assist pointed out what I'd done wrong in my build for the wheel to end up that way (over tensioned), so when I rebuilt it I got the tension correct. The rim i'd crashed was mangled beyond use anyway but it was good to know I wasn't making the same mistake with tension twice. 28 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Solid Strong, Reliable and fairly priced. Built a powertap g3 into it. Perfection 12 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Rim for the Long Haul I had a set of Open Pro's built up in 2003 (?) for my first serious road bike. I rode them for about seven years over all conditions with no problems. Tried other rims and always went back to the Open Pro's, The ruggedness and ride are hard to beat. I would recommend a 28/32 combination, or 32/36 for the bigger folks, for anyone starting out in cycling. 16 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by open pro rims superb rims...buy them and build wheels! 19 April 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Fantastic quality rim Build quality is superb, the grey/green anodising is perfect. There was no left over machined metal rattling around inside the rim, like other brands I have used. Rims were true from out of the box and made for an easy straightforward build. The built up wheels remind me so much of the GP4/MA40 rims I used way back when.... 25 January 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by A single drop of oil inside and out on the eyelet will sort out the creaking. 13 January 2012
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice but noisy Easy to build and stayed pretty true. I loved them for the first 2000 miles. If I could get rid of the creaking of the eyelets when I put more than 100psi in the tyres I could love them again. 14 October 2011
