Octane One 2-PCS Pro Crankset

The lightest & strongest Octane One tubular cromoly crankset comes in a popular & trendy two piece format. Designed as a complete set dedicated for MTB frames with a unique external bottom bracket included. 170mm crank arms made of high quality seamless 4130 cromoly tubing with full heat-treatment. The 19mm diameter hollow axle with 48 micro-splines eliminates the need of pinch-bolts making this crank arm lighter and gives it a clean look. By moving the bearings out of the frame we are not limited to small weak bearings. We use strong Spanish BB 19mm bearings in external alloy cups and the result is wider and stiffer system w/o weight penalty. Right side sprocket mount only – this is a MTB set. Will accept any BMX sprocket with standard 15/16” or 19mm central hole and standard mounting hole (23t and bigger sprocket sizes). The chain line is perfect for MTB!

Octane One 2-PCS Pro Crankset Features:

  • 2.5pcs crank set, 1 side bolt only
  • Arms: 170mm length, heat-treated seamless 4130 cro-mo
  • BB: external cups with 19mm Spanish bb bearings by octane one
  • Compatible with all MTB frames with 68mm euro bb
  • Axle: hollow, 19mm diameter x 48 multi splines
  • Weight w/o bb: ~805mm (crank arms axle)
  • Weight with bb: ~960g (total set: bb, axle, arms, hardware)
  • Colour: Blue
  • Speed: Single Speed
  • Length: 170mm
  • Material: Alloy

Rated 3.8 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent 'set up', if set up right. Really liking this set, the cranks seem tough (how wrong can tubular steel cranks go) and the green is urm striking to say the least. Best bit is the option of an external bottom bracket though as previous Euro BB set ups just aren't as tough or as foolproof to install. The lack of instructions doesn't help but something to take special note of is if you are running a 68mm shell with a chain device that sits behind the bottom bracket cup. The chain device itself is physically widening the bottom bracket shell to around 70mm and this means the tube spacer will be too short to effectively space the bearings. In this event you will side load the bearings when tightening the cranks and this will lead to them being notchy and failing prematurely. If you are running such a device then move one of the thin spacers inside the shell to extend the tube spacer, this way the bearings will hit the tube spacer and the whole set up will tighten with no side loading. 02 July 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by poor quality bottom bracket and crank, literally lasted 2 days before the barings blew out. they just didnt feel rite before I put them on. Not sure if mine was defective but it is poor quality. The bearings in the bb were stiff and squeaked like mad for 2 days before they blew out at the same time I then walked back and the bolt holding the drive side off the crank fell off and I lost it. Cant even seem to get another. Waste of my hard earned money should have stuck to shimano. 27 May 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good Stiff and strong cranks, huge outboard bearings, good pricetag. The only issue I have is that they keep loosening all the time, so I have to carry an 8 mm hex key with me. Even a thread lock didn't help with that. 11 April 2014

Octane One 2-PCS Pro Crankset removal tool

What tool do I need to remove these cranks? Standard crank puller doesn't fit the threads on the left crank arm.

Answer:
I have a standard crank puller which fits fine although I did have to clear some paint out of the threads in the crank first as they hadn't been fully masked during paint.

Answer:
Yes, the Zircus frame runs a threaded Euro BB (68mm) so can accept standard MTB cranks or these BMX style cranks with the use of a Euro-style bottom bracket.
