Fitting a double chainring on a Brompton

I have a pre 2013 Brompton with a 3 speed hub gear and a 44T chainring on which is a
guard fixed by 5 bolts with an approximate BCD of 120mm. I'd like to lower my gears by
fitting a second chainring (and change manually). Any ideas for a cheap and easy solution?

Answer:
This would only be possible is you were to change the crankset for a double crankset and were willing to either carry two chains of varying lengths or have the patience to 'break' the chain every time you wanted to change the chainring it is running on.

This is because a hub gear has no derailleur to take up the chain slack, so once the chain retention is set, you cannot alter chainring sizes unless will to select one of the chain 'solutions' above.

If you would like to discuss this further; please contact our Technical Department below:

I need to find the replacement INNER ring, which is a 32 tooth with 104mm bolt holes, I believe it is shimano part # Y1MM98130, I cannot find it on your website.
I have added the outer triple chainring from your website as a guide to the inner ring I require.

I have an Ultegra SG-X 50/34t FC-6750 compact set. Am I able to fit a 52 or 53t ring instead of the 50t? And if so, which will fit?

Answer:
Unfortunately this would not be possible as the Bolt Circle Diameters are different between 'Compact' and 'Double' crankset gear ratios.

The chainrings cannot physically fit to the crankset.

Answer:
Shimano does not produce stars at 110mm (for a compact) more than 50T, but you can find and use other manufacturers. For example BBB or FSA. but pay attention to BCD = 110mm

Answer:
We have two 'direct mount' options available at present which are listed below.

For a traditional mounted chainring, please supply the Bolt Circle (B.C.D.) to out Technical department as there are a few variations of this crankset.

My new bike, Bianchi Intenso C2C Ultegra has compact chainrings and I would like to up spec to 52t and 38t. Currently the rings on the bike are FSA and the usual 50t and 34t combination. What do you advise?

Answer:
My advise is don't and then ask why would you. Do you feel you absolutely need to and can push a 52-11. I'm pretty sure praxis does a 53 ( maybe 52) in a compact bolt pattern. You could gain that big gear and and keep tne advantage of less overlap with the 34 allowing you lower gears and tighter shifts. Oh ya one ring would be way cheaper than a whole crankset
