Best MTB Helmets 2017

There's never been a wider selection of mountain bike helmets to choose from, so here's what to look out for if you're thinking of replacing your lid.

Open or full-face?

If you're a downhill rider or spend your time at the extreme end of the spectrum, you're going to want a dedicated full-face helmet. For an in-between option, consider a lighter weight full face helmet or one whose chin guard can be removed. The latest generation of all-mountain/enduro lids provide more coverage at the rear of your head.

  • Fit: A correctly fitting helmet, with all straps and adjusters snug and comfortable, is essential. It’s worth noting that while many helmet models are available in a range of sizes, sometimes offerings from particular manufacturers may not best suit a particular head shape.

  • Ventilation: Helmets are designed with a range of air channels and vents the purpose of which is to draw cool air over the head through the front ports, while expelling warm, stale air from the rear. Because of the nature of downhill riding, short race runs mean lack of ventilation on DH lids is not usually a problem, although most will provide some means of circulating cool air through intake ports on the front of the helmet.

  • Technology: High performance helmets pack in as much technology as possible, and some of the latest protection systems include MIPS (Multi-directional Impact Protection System) and Koroyd - claiming to keep you safer should the inevitable happen.

  • Visor: Visors can be useful in preventing glare from the sun or as an additional measure to protect the eyes from protruding branches or airborne debris.
