Rated 5 out of 5 by very value for money crankset for upgrade If you are thinking to upgrade your crankset at a reasonable price. Then Shimano 105 is the right one. Just remember that it does not come with BB so remember to buy Shimano 5700 BB too. Thanks 16 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 Really good Shimano is known for great quality, here's not an exception. Loooks nice and the quality is great. 31 July 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by well it is Shimano well it is Shimano, nothing to complain about it..... 09 May 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by good product at a good price I used this to build an inexpensive time trial bike from chain reaction cycles. Shimano 105 quality has come a long way, I found the finiah to be of very high quality. I had no problems integrating this crankset into a Ultegra 6700 grouppo. 28 October 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Shimano Product I am a mountain biker. But I decided to build a nice road bike for fitness and commuting. I decided to go 105 as it seemed to be a good contrast between quality and price. After building my bike with 105 all over its been superb. I have since had the chance to ride Ultegra and I did not see any huge difference. Strong, light, looks good. Ticks all the boxes. Building my road bike with CRC was a great success. I got an amazing deal and built my bike for around £1200. To buy a bike with my specs from a cycle shop you would be looked at £2500+. Very Happy 27 October 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent All-round Chainset I bought this chainset about 3 months ago and absolutely love it! Extremely high quality at a great price. I would highly recommend this 01 August 2013

Answer:
No you cannot. The chain for an 8 speed cassette is wider than a ten speed chain so it will not fit into the cassette. You will need to replace the cassette, rear derailer, chain and shift lever to upgrade your bike to operate on a ten speeds

Answer:
An 8-speed chain is too wide to shift across the chainrings on this crankset. This is purely because a 10-speed chainring requires a narrow 10-speed chain.

Shimano 105 Chainset - what size?

I want to buy a Shimano 105 10sp double chainset and matching bottom bracket. I notice there are several 'lengths' available - 170mm, 175mm, etc. What does this measurement refer to, and how can I check which one I need?

Answer:
Chainset 'length' refers to the length of the crank arms. This is measured from the centre of the pedal insert to the centre of the axle/ bottom bracket engagement (image below for reference). You can double check your existing cranks and then buy accordingly.

Answer:
The numbers refer to the length of the crank arm in mm. Although they sound like a small difference 5mm is a lot. The length depends on the size of the rider and length of his legs. There are programs out there to help you figure this out, but if you don't know what you're doing get a professional bike fitting.

Will this be compatble with 9sp set up?

Hello,

I run a 9 speed set up at present. Will this 10sp be compatible with it? Also will I need to buy a new chain, if so does the chain need to be 9sp or 10sp as I can't find many 9sp chains?

Thanks

Answer:
If you are only replacing the crankset this will work with 9 or ten speed. Whenever I change any part of a chainset I replace the chain as well, but that's me. It will extend the life of your more expensive components. But to be clear a 9 ort 10 speed chain will work on this crankset.

Answer:
This crankset will perform with a 9-speed drivetrain but a 9-speed chain is required to shift over the cassette; for which the 10-speed chainrings on this crankset will eat through faster than normal.

The suggested chain below is tough and should counteract the chain wear to a certain extent.

Answer:
Ideally you always want to be using the correct speed components with the drivetrain speed that you have (9 with 9, 10 with 10 etc.). The reason is due to 10 speed chainring teeth profiles and cog spacing being slightly narrower than 9 speed tooth profiles and cog spacing. This can result in some loss in optimized shifting performance.
You could use it but notice wear on the chain/chainrings quicker than normal.

Answer:
This crankset is a BSA size and threading. If you wished to use it in a bike with a BB30 bottom bracket you would first need to install a threaded insert to your press fit bottom to make it fit. Adding the threaded insert correctly is a much more difficult job than removing/installing the crankset.

Answer:
Yes, this should be fine as a direct replacement for the FC-5600 (you can retain the existing bottom bracket). When moving to the larger rings you will need to readjust your front derailleur but everything else (shifters, rear derailleur etc) should be fine as it is.
