Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Used on a flat bar CX build. After sevral months of abuse it still works like new. I am using with a mix of components you would not believe. I have been riding cross country Kona MTBs for about 7 years. I tried Cyclocross with my 2013 kahuna dl last winter (13-14) and got hooked. I decided to build a hybrid CX/mountain bike (at least in my head). After some research I decided that my drive train was going to have the Shimano CX-50 crankset as its foundation with an MTB rear cassette. The final set up is a mess, that some how came together like a Mozart symphony shifting flawlessly through the entire 2x10 gears. The set up Crankset Shimano CX-50 2x10 Cassette SRAM 11-34 10spd F der Shimano 105 R der Shimano MTB Deore 9spd SRAM 10spd chain (can't remember the part#) Shifters Shimano Tiagra flat bar 2x10 BB Shimano 105 I have used this combination on MTB single track, gravel roads and paved roads. I have geared out my bike on flat and downhill paved sections, but most of my riding has been on gravel and single track in South Texas and Southern Arizona. So far I have no complains and friends that have taken it for a ride are flabbergasted by how well my mess of a drivetrain shifts! 02 October 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Veryg godd quality chainset, but not 105-standard A very good chainset for a good price. BUT it is marketed as same quality as Shimano 105, and that is not the case. Even people at at some resellers says it is eqv to 105. If you compare the weights CX50 - CX70 to Tiagra and 105, and also compare the prices, you soon realize the CX50 is just a Tiagra chainset with different Sprockets 24 August 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Comfortable spacing between Outer/Inner chainring Had this installed on my road bike 2x10 speeds. Compared to the standard or compact crankset, the CX 46/36T front is much more usable and comfortable for me as an older and non-competitive rider. 15 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by A bit chunky, but it does the job and is great value I use this on my road bike. Works perfectly well. There isn't much to a crank, but I can't say I have any problems with my drive line. For the money spent, it is ideal. It is a little bit chunky and could be lighter. 03 February 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by It's a crank Using this on a roadbike with a low ratio rear casette for commuting and general hacking about on lanes and bridleways. Sits nicely in price between Tiagra and 105 while more 105-ish in quality and construction. It will gear out quickly downhill, but if you aren't racing or trying to keep up with anyone that's not hugely important. 04 December 2013

Answer:
Yes it does. That is the standard-combo from Shimano with this chainset. CX50 are in reality a slightly modified Tiagra-chainset.

Answer:
Yes; the Shimano Press Fit BB (BB71/BB91) run the same 24mm spindle as the Hollowtech II external BB; the Shimano chainsets will work on either bracket system.

I have a Merida Cyclo-Cross 4 2014 which I use to commute to work. It is fitted with FSA Gossamer Cross 46-36 Mega chainset which I am not that impressed with. Would I be able to replace it with this Shimano 105 CX50 Chainset as it has the same size chain rings, I am aware I would also need to purchase a new bottom bracket to go with it. Running Shimano 105 shifters and derailleurs so would be nice to have all Shimano 105 set-up.
If I wanted a higher top speed could I fit a different chainset with different size chain rings? Only recently got into cycling so not sure about such things.

Answer:
This crankset will be a fine replacement when using the bottom bracket suggested below.

Should a larger chainring size be required in the future; be aware that a larger capacity Front Derailleur may also be compulsory.

Answer:
A 10sp chain is narrower than 9 speed, so chainrings and their spacing is closer too. As a result, you won't be able to get a 10sp chainset and 9sp rear setup to work efficiently; for best performance you should try to keep your drivetrain all the same brand and speed.

Answer:
Unfortunately due to the difference in chain width and chainring tooth profiles between 8-speed and 10-speed; this combination would not function well at all.

The Claris crankset may be a better option for your bike setup.
