Rated 5 out of 5 by First time on SPD's I bought these for my first experience with SPD's, and they seem great. I specifically wanted the backside for flat shoes, as I often ride to locations where I want to leave my bike and walk around comfortably. The downside to this is you can only clip into the one side, meaning it's easier to fumble around trying to clip in if your focus is elsewhere. From new, the pedals had a lot of internal friction (from grease, I assume) against rotation which compounded the issue, but over time they're loosening up. 18 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by I love these pedals I have three pairs of these pedals on (1) my road bike, (2) my commute bike and (3) on my mountain bike. I like the fact they can be used with regular or biking shoes. It is according to me the best compromise. 09 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Large and light. Those pedals are light and large for my road bike. I use the flat side because i don't have clip shoes but i'll buy some because it pedal's much easyer with the clips. 16 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Good starter pedal First foray into clipless pedals. They work well and are simpler than I expected. Having flat pedal gives good flexibility but worth experimenting with different shoes on the flat side as can be a bit slippy (not a major problem). Also, easy to fit despite limited maintenance experience. 16 June 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 Great pedals A good multi purpose pedal.. SPD clips very well too.. Downside is that the flat part of the pedal becomes very slippery when it's wet. 09 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Good Dual Sides SPD Pedals The pedal is not too light because it is an alloy material. It works either for SPD shoes or casual shoes which we have already known. The ball bearings are very smooth while pedaling and these bearings have been greased when they came here. The black paint will scratch like someone has mentioned before. The scratches are usually done by the metal cleats underneath your shoes. The non-clip sides of the pedals will definitely receive more scratches because you need to dismount your SPD shoes before traffic light/stopping and mounting onto it again may not be a breeze (sometimes you will step on the non-clip side and scratch it). So, scratches are definitely bound to have. It is my first SPD pedals and it is fun and save me load of effort during pedaling. Yes, you have to practice mounting and dismounting many times before going out to the road. It comes bundled with single release cleat. The releasing action is twisting your heel sideway outward/away from the pedal. I got falls while practicing too. I fell one time when not dismounting at my usual landing (left) foot. So, dismounting at your usual landing foot is very important because you may have got used to land at that direction. I will suggest dismounts your landing foot from the SPD pedal around 30-50 metres before traffic light so that you can land safely with 1 foot and balancing it when you halt your bike. I have read the other reviews and bought the multi-release cleats SM-56H but I have never used it yet as I am very used to this bundled SM-SH51 single-release cleats now. 22 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Using on a recumbent-work well Got this for my Performer recumbent high racer. was hesitant on getting a clipless pedals as I am in a reclining position. However, after I found out that there are many recumbent riders using clipless, I decided to try. Its easy to install, came with lots of grease. Clipping tightness can be adjusted, which makes it easy for a newbie like me to get use to using clipless. Its double platform, so I can use any other shoes with it. 14 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Another great Shimano Product These pedals are faultless for quality, and great Value from CRC. a top general purpose pedal if you want the best of both worlds. 12 April 2014

I was thinking about the shimano M064 or M088, both SPD MTB shoes.

Also, will I need to buy cleats or they included with the pedal or the shoes?
thanks

Answer:
Both of those should work with the pedals. The pedals include SM-SH51 cleats with them, but additional cleats can be bought separately if they wear out.

Optional Cleat SH56

It says that it comes with SH51 but SH56 is optional. Does it mean that I can change to SH56 with out extra cost? How about other Shimano pedals, does those come usually with SH51 and is changing to SH56 possible with those?
