Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 4 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Nice piece I own two of these chainsets, the first came fitted to my Giant Seek 0 comutting bike, and i was impressed enough to buy a second for the hardtail mtb i built this summer, like one of the other reviewers i had to move the chain-ring, i just moved it to the other side of the spider and used different bolts - it works fine. I have only given four stars because i am a bit disappointed that the bottom-bracket bearings on the road bike have only lasted 3000 miles of (all weather) commutting - i have got over 5000 miles out of older Shimano b/b's. Going by this i am expecting about 1000 miles from the mtb. 28 November 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by The best choice for hub gears This is a lot of crank for the money. Quality-wise on par with a dura-ace, at a fraction of the cost. I love the Alfine hubs (8 and 11 speed) and I've tried various track chainsets but I always come back to this one. I've measured the q-factor to 150mm, so it should be easy enough to check whether there will be a conflict with the chainstay. 150mm is narrower than the other cranks I've used, and that makes cycling with this set extremely comfortable. Also, the chainline is perfect with Alfine and Nexus sprockets. Finally, this crank looks great. All aluminum (even the chainguard). Why spend a lot of money on expensive sets when this gem is available? 02 September 2011
Rated 4 out of 5 by Works well bit of effort installing I bought this set for my mountainbike that I have converted into a daily commuter. BB installation was fine no problem simple to change chain ring also (not required but something I wanted to do). The kit comes complete with pre-greased Hollowtech II BB and crank arms. My problem was that it did not fit my frame the crank arms on the non-drive, left, side hit the chain stay. Managed to track down an Ultegra spacer (3mm) that did the trick and now runs like a dream, very smooth and solid. 13 October 2010

Availability of double chain guard version

Hi, i understand this crank comes in a double chainguard version that has a longer axle. It will then hopefully fit in a 73mm BB cup width 29er. Can you tell me if CRC are able to provide this type of crank please?

Answer:
Our stock of these chainsets is the Single guard version only. I don't believe the double guard version is compatible with a 73mm BB shell though, as Shimano only list this crank as suitable for a 68mm shell, regardless of version.

Answer:
This crankset is designed primarily to be used with a Shimano Alfine Gear Hub; which has internal gearing.

Using this crankset with a conventional cassette is not recommended as the chainline for an Alfine hub is direct and this is not the case with a cassette.

The chainline on an Alfine Crankset is 42.7mm (51mm is the standard for 8,9 and 10-speed drivetrains); so some spacing issues could occur when installing this setup.

Bottom bracket length

Hi,

I would like to know what's the length of the BB.
I have a 68-120mm square BB and my current chainset (single speed) sits very close to the frame. It is a 42t chainring. Would I have enough space with this chainset?

Answer:
The Alfine S500 runs an external, Hollowtech II bottom bracket system (supplied with the crank). It is suitable for all 68/73mm BSA frames, so should replace your existing system without any trouble.

Answer:
Using an 8-speed chain should be fine with this crankset; chain rub may occur on the integrated rear chainguide, although this could be removed should this be the case.
