Rated 5 out of 5 by 19 July 2014
Rated 1 out of 5 by Not for me, the standard cleats far better. I have been using clipless pedals since 1997, initially the Time ATAC range then the Crank Brothers Candy range when they first came out. So I know how to fit and use cleats. Like many others I eventually got tired of the frequent maintenance Candy's require. So I bought some XTR Trails as my first Shimano pedals, and thought I would try the multi-release cleats first as they are described as being closer in feeling to the Crank Brothers cleats. I fitted the cleats (Shimano shoes) and set the pedals to the lightest release, and pulled straight out of them. So I increased the tension by 3 clicks, this time I stayed in them, but the slightest angulation of my foot caused a release. However, far more annoying was the constant vertical rattle of the cleats in the pedals. Increasing the tension did not remove this. I then removed the multi-release cleats and fitted the standard ones. What a change, I was locked in solidly, still had float, and no rattle. My recommendation is that experienced users do not bother with the multi-release cleats, just use the standard ones. 12 July 2014

I've used these cleats on my Shimano SPD MTB and Road shoes with no problems, just keep a check on the screw tightness they are inclined to loosen up during the first 100 miles.

Answer:
I believe the SH56 cleats have the same 4 degrees of float sa the SH51 cleats, but are multi-directional release so you can engage/ disengage by turning your heel in either directon (or by bunnyhopping), while the SH51 cleats only engage from one side.
