Shimano hubs are quality pure.. They are lose ball bearings - old style - and cost very little. I build up my son's bike and some friend's bike with them and everyone is happy. The weight of course is the biggest downside.. if not in use as a hub, one could use the Shimano hubs as dumbells - they do weigh a ton. If you look for something solid that's gonna last you for many years, this is a good choice..

Just started using this hub as my old hub has done its 2000+ so far this year, feels smooth but have not really put it to the test yet,nor does it have any real mileage under its belt. however going from the previous hub I was using I doubt I will have problems with it. Will update this review in a couple of months or a few hundred miles.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Anonymous Lock nuts keep loosening
I've had similar problems to others. On two occasions i've noticed my back wheel has lost almost all of it's spin - on closer inspection, the problem has been that the lock nut on the drive side is loose, and the hub had gone stupidly tight somehow - when the wheel was removed it was hard to turn the axle with fingers.
Because you can't access the adjustable cone on the drive side it's impossible to fix this problem without pulling the axle out. You might have to remove the cassette to do this.
Then tighten the drive side lock nut as hard as possible against the cone, and then re-grease and re-assemble. Then you can adjust the left-hand cone properly against the drive side cone that you've previously locked in place. Tighten the left hand-cone down and re-fit the rubber seal.
I've had to do that twice in a year. As soon I've got the money & time I'm planning on binning this rubbish hub.

Cheap and reasonable quality. Dirt ingress can be troublesome on wet trails, bearing cones have a nasty habit of going lose (though this normally takes several rough rides). Free hub is not the strongest and the pickup is very slow. Would be 2 stars but they are so cheap.

Really good hub for a lower price. One of the best choices if you don`t want to spend so much. No different than the XT hub on the inside.

Can not say it again. I am stupid for putting a 3rd one on my bike.
I owned the original that came with the bike, and bought 2 spares. Expecting I would get atelast a year out of them each, as I ride over 1000 miles a year in teh woods.
First one, 3 months 500 miles, Prawls Broke.
Second one, less then 100 Miles, and 4 rides, Prawls Broke
Third One, Last night, less then 60 miles, 3 rides, Prawls Broke.
Just normal MTBing... some hard climbs... but nothing more then the other 15 years of biking I have been doing, same trails, never have broken Prawls before.... Forget 3 hubs in 2 months...! Lots of walking, and at one event, so lots of folks got the word of this junk that day!
Glad to say I went through all I had, more glad to say, Never ever buy Shimano, if they have the balls to put this junk on Mountain Bikes... They should really be ashamed of themselves....
