Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent shifters, crisp and accurate! Bought these to upgrade from 8 speed to 9, with Alivio (stock) rear mech and Deore front mech. Setup was easy, cables and housings included in the box. And it works flawlessly. Very little regular maintenance is needed, just clean and re-lube the chain, sprockets & chainset every now and then, and it shifts like wonder. One little drawback is the positioning of the display (gear indicators), angled too forward in my opinion. 28 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Just a bit of difference from SLX M670 I use this with an old Shimano RD-M510 on a 1 x 9s hard tail. Functionary, I don’t feel that much of difference from SL-M670 that I have on another bike, except that M590 slightly(?) has the wider stroke (when shifting down). Both work just fine, so briskly without any mis-shifts or jamming, or anything like that. The panel of the indicator is facing a bit too forward, rather than upward, to see in the ordinary riding position if you set the shifter rather downward according to the angle of the brake lever. And as this indicator unit can’t be removed and replaced with the flat lid, you can only use it inside of the brake lever, even though you need it outside of it for the better levers’ positions (SLX, XT, XTR can do this, though I don’t know if the new Deore can ) The 2 way release (Rapid Fire Plus) is essential for me as I always want my index finger on the brake lever, and also because there is not enough space for the finger to put in between the brake & shift levers. It can be fatal especially when descending hard, if your index finger gets lost for its right position. (I really like to know how you guys are managing the release with forefinger when you need a quick shift-up) On the other hand, the gap between the up-lever and the down-lever is quite wide (1cm wider than that of M670, actually), it does feel a bit awkward only with the thumb during the repetition of shifting up & down. Probably this is also due to the shape of the pads, thick and a bit bulky M590’s, comparing to M670’s sophisticated thinner ergonomic designed ones. (M610 looks as neat as M670 this time). Mechanically, it works just briskly and precisely without any discontent. But when you expect it too much, you tend to notice some negative trifles. You won’t mind them and give them up if it’s the latest model, but you are not too happy with accepting it when the new, improved ones are already available… It’s all up to you which to choose after all. The newer, expensive, more comfortable one without any bother, or the older cheaper one with a bit of discomfort to enjoy. Optimistically, with a chance to activate your brain how to make it better to use. It’s Shimano’s anyway. You’ won’t be disappointed too much. That’s for sure, guaranteed. Recommended. ※ Sorry, I haven’t tried the 3s left one yet. 22 January 2014

Rated 2 out of 5 by Lever is sticky I have used this for some years now. Shifts very well, but the big lever keeps on staying in back position whenever it is used. Very inconvenient. 20 November 2013

Answer:
Outers are cut lengths which may not suit your requirements so you will probably need to buy an outer cable (not expensive) and cut to required length, plus outer cable end caps.

I have a pair of worn out Shimano Deore LX mega 9 - shifters on my bike, and wonder if the Shimano Deore M590 9 can replace it.

Thanks in advance for your answer:)

Answer:
The cable pull ratio between these shifters is the same and will shift well if not better than the original LX shifters.

compatibility with older Shimano rear mech

Hi, I have an old mountain bike from 15/20 years ago with a Shimano Deore XT rear mech - it was supplied with a Shimano LX 9 speed shifter, which now can only select 4 out of 9 gears, & a front mech Shimano LX shifter which only does 2 out of 3 gears -so I need to replace them both - would these M590s work ok with my older Shimano front & rear mechs ?

Answer:
Shimano have not changed derailleur styles or the cable pull ratio's in their gearing, so the new shifter's should have no compatibility issues when running with the older components.

Answer:
Yes, the Shimano Deore M590 shifters will work with any Shimano 3x9speed mechs. Just make sure that there is nothing wrong with the sprockets, chainset, front and rear mechs, and the chain. Plus, if I were you, I would definitely use the WD40 on the internals of the Shimano LX shifters to try to degunk them. They might work again (most of the times it does). :)
