Shimano Saint M820 Shadow+ 10 Speed Rear Mech

New chain control and silencing technologies in the new RD-M820 are a game changer for gravity riding. In addition to the proven Shadow Plus RD design, a Saint specific, high durometer urethane bump stopper (between the RD and the dropout) was added to reduce impact noise. Now 10-speed, the new RD-M820 features a durable super wide link that serves as the backbone of the DH parallelogram. Ready for track and trail, the mode converter easily adapts between two settings for MTB cassette gear ratios (11-32, 11-34, 11-36) and road (11-23, 11-25, 11-28).

Features:

  • Direct Mount gives a simpler, cleaner look
  • Deore XT Shadow+ Dyna-Sys 10-speed rear derailleur delivers reliable and precise shifting with a stiff and lightweight open design
  • Shadow+ features a super low profile design that reduces the risk of damage from trail side hazards
  • Shadow Plus uses a chain stabilising switch that when on will reduce chain bounce in rough terrain maintaining more stable drive and shifting. This can be switched off to remove the wheelDirect cable routing prevents snagging from any trail side hazards
  • All-alloy construction leads to lower weight without compromising strength and durability
  • Four fluorine-coated link pin bushings make this one of the slickest shifting derailleurs on the trails
  • High rigidity wide outer link braces the pulley body to increase pivot joint rigidity resulting in a crisp shift
  • Strong return spring for a positive shifting feel
  • Durable sealed bearing pulleys
  • 35T capacity GS cage
  • 10-speed only
  • Urethane elastomer bump stop reduces noise
  • Mode converter (DH mode/Freeride mode)
  • Super wide links: Create a rigid structure that resists twisting and improves durability
  • Integrated skid plate: Protects the derailleur in the event of an impact

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by This product is awesome have great performance shifting never regretting getting one 21 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ultimate rear d The best rear d to pair with a Saint shifter. Precise shifting. Crash proof and it out perform my SRAM XO anytime. 28 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by quick and smooth This is my second Saint Derailleur, use to have M810 long cage (feel heavier), got this love it, 5 star product, and the cable only come with the shifter, Derailleur don't come with cable 15 May 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Very Good This is a very good product strong light and shifts very smooth it looks the part to worth the buy 25 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Tough I got this when I upgraded to 10 speed on my AM bike. No regrets at all. Ran the shifter with a SRAM PG1070 (11-36) cassette and XTR M980 Shifters. Smooth and relaible. I can mash hard on the gears with no worry of slipping, mis-shifting. It also withstood countless crashes and knocks. In one incident, a 5 inch x 2 inch thick wood branch got caught in my rear d, spokes and rotor. I managed to pull it out and the derailleur was unscathed. Solid product that you don't need to worry about. 14 April 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Great For DH! Excellent Product. Lasted a good season at Whistler. This is key: ensure that you get the shop to preform maintenance every 20 or so hours on the internal spring. This isn't well known but is mandatory if you want the spring to have a decent lifetime 17 February 2014
Rated 3 out of 5 by Great mech, some cheap components Broken the clutch lever on two separate mechs now. 21 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great! Shifts well and very durable. My only complaint is that CRC should've stated that this was OEM and doesn't come with any cable housing supplied. 08 November 2013

Answer:
The Shimano Saint M820 has two different settings, one for "Downhill" and one for "Freeride" riding.
"Freeride" mode will work with 11-32/11-34/11-36 sprockets and "Downhill" mode will work with 11-23-11-25-11-28 sprockets.
To use a Freeride cassette ratio you need to engage the mode converter on the back of the mech which gives the mech a bit more leverage for the larger sprocket sizes.

Answer:
When using a 42t rear cog you will need a Medium cage rear derailleur for a 1x setup, and a Long cage for a 2x setup. Short cage derailleurs such as this Saint will not be suitable.

It barely can work. Puts alot of stress on the rear D. Suggest you use at least a mid cage rear D

The Shimano Saint M820 Shadow+ Mech would be a Low Normal as standard, the only Top Normal version I know of is the 'Shimano XT M770 Rapid Rise Mech'

Answer:
This 10-speed mech is not compatible with a 9-speed drivetrain as a 10-speed system requires a narrow 10-speed chain which is only compatible with a 10-speed cassette.

Can I fit the Saint M820 on a regular Cube hardtail MTB derailleur hanger?
I'm thinking about a 1x10 setup on a Cube Reaction hardtail based on the Saint groupset.
Thanks.
