11 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Brilliant One word => BRILLIANT made in japan quality Perfect shifting every time and ive had it for years. Its not a compact (short cage) as a saint m810 rear mech but this is seriously the next best mech at 1/3 the price!. Get it while 9 speed is still alive! (Im stickin to 9 speed!) 03 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great product for the price I've had this for about 2 years and given it a beating, yet it hasn't skipped a beat. I'm buying another one just because of normal wear and tear. For bush bashers like me, I reckon it's great. 02 July 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by years old had it 3 years no is it 5 faultless service for years 15 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by great value for money This SLX derailleur was a much needed upgrade from the previous alivio that gained alot of play in the jockey arm. Worlds apart the new slx derailleur provides clean and quiet shifting as well as reduced chainslap at a pocket money price. Also the neat shadow design not only is practical but looks better on my bike. 15 June 2014

Answer:
It will be ok providing that you set up the limit screws and B screw appropriately. Bear in mind that the pulley wheel size has changed on 9sp mechs but it will run fine out of the box.

I would think yes, you only have to make sure the reach is properly set and you have the right shifters for the cassette you are using.

This will be fine. The 9 speed rear mech will do what the 8 speed shifters tell it to. You only start running into problems when you go 10 speed or above.

Answer:
the capacity of a derailleur means the amount of difference in teeth between (the front biggest chainring + the rear biggest gear) and (the front smallest chainring + the rear smallest gear)

Answer:
GS = medium cage; SGS = long cage

It refers to the maximum number of teeth that the derailleur can accept and shift smoothly with.

So if you plan to get a cassette which does not have more than 35 teeth (e.g. 11-34T), go for GS.

Answer:
A simple formula for calculating of derailleur total capacity: (largest number of teeth of the cassette - smallest number of teeth of the cassette) + (largest number of teeth of the crankset - smallest number of teeth of the crankset) = total capacity.
For example - (32-11)+(44-22)=43Т.

I currently have an RDM592SGS on a 2011 Lapierre Spicy 216. Would this derailleur be an upgrade?

Also I now run a single ring up front and the standard 11-34 at the rear. Is the medium cage the best option for this?

Answer:
The M592 is the Deore level mech, so this SLX represents a direct upgrade and should fit without any problem. As you are running a single ring on the front, a Medium cage rear derailleur will be fine, yes.

Answer:
RDM-592 is standard Deore. Hence that would be an upgrade.

As for the cage length- if you are running a single ring I would go for a short cage. It will work with medium if necessary too but you might have some issues with chain tension.

Answer:
The spring tention will be greater as the older mech's spring is already worn, but it will not make a huge difference. If you want an increase your chain tention I suggest you shorten your chain or get yourself one of those "shadow plus" mechs which have a lever to increase the chain tention.

Answer:
The mech (derailleur) itself won't be responsible for that but the straight forward answer is yes. It will be new, which in effect improves the tension, and also it's a better design as the B spring was removed and these are gravity reliant now.

Yes you can use the SGS version with only one minor problem, that is there is no cable adjuster on this unit. You can however fit a cable inline adjuster to compensate.

The largest cassette max sprocket which is compatible with this derailleur is 34tooth; meaning that shifting through am 11-36t cassette would not be mechanically possible.
