Shimano SLX M665 Double Chainset

The SLX group includes two types of Hollowtech II cranksets for different types of riding styles. The first is an all-mountain compact drive crankset with a double chainring 36/22T combination, designed to give more range over the traditional 32/22T setup. It has a reinforced construction with increased axle and spider strength to meet the rigors of all-mountain riding. This crankset includes a “honeycomb” bash guard, a steel pedal thread insert and is claimed to be 100% stronger than the XT crankset.

In addition to the double/bash guard chainset, there will also be a triple SLX crankset for cross-country riding where a larger gear range is required. Using technology from the current generation of XT and XTR chainsets the triple will come with a composite/steel middle chainring that doubles durability over the standard middle ring and improves the shifting performance. It will be available in a chainring combination of 44/32/22T.

Shimano SLX M665 Double Chainset Features:

  • Triple (FC-M660) and wide range 36-22 double (FC-M665) with honeycomb bashguard available.
  • FC-M660 composite middle chainring increases service life by 100% with smoother shifting.
  • Super rigid FC-M665 crankarm is 100% stronger than Deore XT FC-M770.

  • Double chainring
  • Teeth - 36/22T
  • 4 Bolt
  • Size - 170 mm or 175 mm

Rated 5 out of 5 by A+++++ Purchased these a week ago. First of all they never came with the preload bolt, which was disappointing but a quick email to CRC and they sent me one out next day special delivery. Apart from the little hiccup with the bolt I am still totally over the moon with them. Strong, fantastic value just by them, over 70 review with an overall 5 star well that says it all 16 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by good strong crank Bought to replace a fsa stock crank. This has changed my riding as this crank is much stronger and smoother and gives support and courage when riding. 15 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Ottimo!!!!!!!! Davvero un bel prodotto che sostituisce egregiamente le solite tre corone 44-32-22! 05 April 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent quality product I got this for 2 reasons, firsly because my bottom bracket was shot and my stock cranks worn, and secondly because I wanted to get rid of the big ring after a crash that bent the teeth on my old one and left me with puncture wounds on my leg. This product has been brilliant. Great quality, sturdy and confidence inspiring, not to mention more clearance over rocks. I was concerned at first that I would suffer through having fewer gears... not so. The 22/36 double rings give me everything I need. Only the steepest of fire roads will have you beating the air with your feet but who rides MTB's to ride fire roads? 14 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Can't beat it Excellent value and quality. The crank itself is light (a couple a grams lighter than XTR would you believe! It's just the chain rings that account for the extra weight... when they wear out replace with lighter rings and you'll have XTR overall weight at a fraction of the cost!) 28 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by super tough, affordable cranks despite my review summary i have actually broken two of these. first one i snapped the left crank arm clean in half, but that was after 4 years of riding. and the second one i stripped the pedal threads after clipping it on a rock. the best thing about these cranks is the fact they keep their looks for ever. never looking scuffed due to the machined face on them. I have no idea if they are stiff or not compared to other modern day competitors. but hollowtech/ext bb is , by a long way, stiffer than the old octalink/isis/squaretaper. systems. if you are getting these i thoroughly recommend getting the model with steel pedal inserts. why any company even thinks of making expensive cranks without steel pedal inserts is beyond me. it doesn't take much for a pedal to be ripped out 26 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by использую около года стоят на хардтейле, они очень легкие и достаточно прочные для dirt jumping^а, убрав стандартные звезды и поставив звезду из алюминия, вес системы получился около ~880-900 грамм 22 January 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Top Crank! Excellent Crank for the money, have this model on 3 of our bikes never let us down, performs like others twice its money! 17 December 2013

Answer:
As long as it is a 104BCD then yes you can. Also make sure that the ring design (bolt arms) does match the SLX crankset as sometimes that need a bit of trimming (rings that is) to fit snugly.

Answer:
as far as i am aware, every external bb style crankset, regardless of manufacturer, comes with a BB.

as with all recommendations -style of riding is very important, as is budget. my recommendation would be SLX , but make sure it is the model with the steel pedal inserts, typically this is the one with 1 or 2 ring + bash guard. and NOT the triple ring variation

steel pedal inserts should be on all cranks regardless of intended weight savings. far too easy to rip pedals out of normal aluminium cranks with no inserts

I currently have a Kona Tanuki with this BB installed.... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shimano-un26-square-taper-bottom-bracket/rp-prod34652

From what I can gather this double chainset ships with this BB: SM-BB70 - 68, 73mm

My question is will i be able to remove my old BB and fit this new one along with the chainset and it all to work together?

Answer:
The UN26 is not compatible with this crankset and would need to be removed and replaced with the Hollowtech II bottom bracket for this crankset to function.

The tool below will enable removal of the UN26, the other tool; the Hollowtech tool will make installing the new bottom bracket possible.

Answer:
yes, it will fit. without going to the hassle of researching your exact BB dimensions, i would have to guess, that it will have a 73mm bb and will be fine.....you would run the new external BB without the spacers or maybe just one. if it is a 68mm bb then you may have to run two or all three spacers. where it gets complicated is chain line.

with the new cranks this will be determined by the amount of spacers you are running on the drive side between the frame and the new bb cup. play safe and run with 1 spacer, once its all up and running you can see if the chain line is well out by looking at the middle cog in the front ( or the most used out of a double ring set up, or on a single ring set up - the only ring available) and follow the chain to the middle of the rear sprocket - say cog 5 , and it should be as straight a line as possible, if not then you need to add or remove spacers from the between the bb cup and the frame to create that straight line. yes its a bit of a pain but once done it will help extend the life of your drive train drastically.

As you are only running a twin ring system on the front you can fit either a 2x or 3x front mech.

Most 9 speed drivetrain front mechs are only available in 3x so there will be no problem fitting one.

I am looking at fitting some of these cranks onto my 2009 Santa Cruz Chameleon.

I will require a front Mech to go with the crankset, either an XT or an SLX.

Which model do i require as when looking most of them state suitable for 44-48 Tooth Top Ring and obviously these cranks have a smaller top ring than that.

Thanks

Ash

Answer:
The suggested derailleur below is compatible, the 44t - 48t max capacity derailleurs are fine to use with lower tooth counts.

The 2009 Santa Cruz Chameleon requires a 34.9mm clamp which requires part number - sku70107.

I bought the SLX 2x9 front derailleur with mine but my big ring was only 36 teeth. The SLX 2x9 was made for a 36 tooth max ring... This means that it didn't sit really high above the bash guard.
