Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 5 reviewers.
Rated 4 out of 5 by Excellent value FD I bought the FD-4503 to replace an FD-4403 on which the protuberance on the alloy casting which retains the tensioning spring had sheared off - a frequent failure it seems. The FD-4403 is no longer available. However, the two mechs are not equivalent, as the 4503 is not designed to operate on the 52-42-30 tooth chainset on my bike, as the maximum operating difference being 20T. I fitted is as per instructions on the technical leaflet, and whilst the chain shifted between all three chainrings, there was a lot of contact between the chain and cage in all three gear ratios. I read a discussion forum on this topic, where a contributor had suggested mounting the FD higher than recommended by Shimano. I moved the FD up to give a clearance of ~5mm between the outer curve of the cage and the teeth of the 52T chainring and bingo, it worked a lot better. It still required use of the "feathering" facility of the STI leaver to eliminate rubbing in some positions. 24 March 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Sturdy and Simple I was building a Touring Bike out of a brand new frame and old components I had surplus from various upgrades. Due to diameter issues I found the front mech difficult as I couldn't fit the existing one. i then purchased a MTB front Mech with the same 3 x 9 config and it would not shift properly (Be aware of this if you are a roadie) This gave me the perfect scenario and I purchased this alongside a Braze On Adapter and have had many happy touring miles since without glitch. Strongly Recommended 01 March 2014
Rated 4 out of 5 by Be careful with Shimano compatability.... Great price and delivery from Chain Reaction but this front mech didn't fit with my existing Shimano components. The bike is well maintained with fairly new STI 4503's and a less than one year old Shimano bottom bracket and cassette. It wouldn't shift onto the big ring and so I had to return the front mech to Chain Reaction. No problem at all with CRC,usual great service. 25 November 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent quality at superb value price I was positively surprised how good quality is this product, the shifting is effortless and it comes at much less cost than top of the range front mechs, without any loss in quality! Highly recommended! 03 September 2013
Rated 4 out of 5 by no fuss front mech For dinosaurs like me still maintaining a 9spd Ultegra drivetrain, decent replacement components are getting harder to come by. Though this might not be quite as pretty as 105 or above, it's a perfectly well finished item (Made in Japan) that fits in fine with the rest of the groupset and more importantly it does exactly what it's supposed to. It is rated as 20T max difference i.e. for a 50/39/30 triple but I've had no problems at all using it on my 52/42/30 - what's 2 teeth after all? Good kit and cheap. 26 November 2010

Answer:
Braze on is a mounting interface where the mech bolts directly to a special tab on the frame. The alternate style is band/clamp on, where the mech has a clamp to go around the seat tube.

Answer:
Its a silly word isnt it.

Braze On is simply an adapter that will fix onto the front mech, to fix it to the frame. Some Mech's don't need this as its normally integrally part of the mech but in some cases its not (like this mech) which I purchased as my frame was an odd diameter.

If you buy this Mech - The only thing you need to do is buy the correct diameter braze on.

I brought my braze on here, its the Shimano Di2 Braze on. That may work for you.

Do you stock a flat bar shifter that is compatible with the 4503 mech? I am building up a road frame with brazed mount and want to fit a flat bar rather than drops.
