Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 13 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Better than dura ace This mech is perfect, it had not needed touching since fitting, it's smooth and silent, it has sealed bearings on the jockey wheels and looks great in dark grey. Don't understand why anyone would pay four times the prices for a small weight saving with dura ace! 16 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by quality shimano product love ultegra items in grey,in my opinion look better then dura ace.this has not needed no adjustments since fitting 11 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by GREAT I went for the long cage as I have a 30-12 / 28-11 / 25-11 cassettes which I change depending on the type of cycle im doing and the compact or short cage I hear (could be bull) but it does not take well with the 30-12 so from advice I have got I decided to use the longer cage and it works very well with a 30-12 when the occasion requires it mostly it has a 28-11 attached with no issues almost flawless gear changing all the time in fact it works that well to upgrade to dura ace, would be something I would not like to do, due to the way this derailleur works FLAWLESS. 11 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Value for money Shimano road rear derailleur Good value rear derailleur in the Shimano 10-speed road range. Allows the use of 12-30 cassette for tough climbs even with the short cage version. 10 August 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Great Product great product that does the job well and at an affordable price. 23 June 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Brought for HILLS I was entered into this years etape, i'm not the smallest cyclist and needed more gears as big hills, this with 12-30 cassette has worked for me, i've been in Spain doing training up cat 1 climbs for over 2 hours of climbing and it was hard but plodded along. I'm now looking forward to the Etape. 11 June 2014

Sadly it won't work, you will have gear-shifting issues unless you use a compatible 9-speed rear mech to partner your existing drivetrain.

Answer:
A Shimano road medium cage is 83mm in length from the jockey wheels centre to centre. If your own cage is shorter you will then require a medium cage mech.

It is not possible to switch cages between mech bodies.

Short or Medium?

Hi,

How do I know which cage I need? Will my existing mech have a marking on it to tell me what it is or do I need to check something else? All I know is that I have an ultegra 6700 grey?

Answer:
The cage length required is in relation to the tooth count capacity of the drivetrain; the cage length controls the chain slack caused by larger capacity drivetrains.

If you can supply the tooth count on the chainrings of your crankset and the tooth count of the largest and smallest sprocket on your cassette to our Technical Department below, we can advise further.

Answer:
The difference between Short and Medium is the "Tooth Capacity". The derailleur has a spring arm which moves to take up the slack chain when you change gears from your largest chainring and sprocket to your smallest chainring and sprocket. Generally, a triple chainring setup requires more tooth capacity than a single or double chainring. However, you still need to work out the tooth capacity you need by counting the maximum difference for your chainrings and sprockets.

Max Chainring DIfference = Largest Chainring - Smallest Chainring
Max Sprocket Difference = Largest Sprocket - Smallest Sprocket
Tooth Capacity = Max Chainring DIfference + Max Sprocket Difference

The Short Cage has a Tooth Capacity of 33t
The Medium Cage has a Tooth Capacity of 39t

This derailleur is only compatible with sprockets no larger than 28t and no smaller than 11t. Also the Max Chainring Difference must be no greater than 16t for Short Cage and 22t for Medium Cage.

Answer:
The longer cage allows for more drivetrain options without worrying about the chain become slack but its heavier by a very small amount.

medium is a better option if your like me and change your gear ratios alot

Answer:
Max Chainring DIfference = Largest Chainring - Smallest Chainring = 50t-34t = 16t
Max Sprocket Difference = Largest Sprocket - Smallest Sprocket = 28t-12t = 16t
Tooth Capacity = Max Chainring DIfference + Max Sprocket Difference = 16t + 16t = 32t

The Short Cage has a Tooth Capacity of 33t -- OK
The Medium Cage has a Tooth Capacity of 39t -- OK

This derailleur is only compatible with sprockets no larger than 28t and no smaller than 11t. -- OK
Also the Max Chainring Difference must be no greater than 16t for Short Cage and 22t for Medium Cage. -- OK

From the above, it would suggest that both Short and Medium cages would be suitable. Short has the advantage of being stealthier, lighter, snappier etc whilst Medium would give you the option of running a wider gearing in future. Personally I'd go Short Cage.

Answer:
I answer myself with this cuestion answered before mine:
"I have an Ultegra CS-6700 12/30 cassette and I am looking to use it with an Ultegra RD-6700-A derailleur.
I understand that there are two versions of the RD-6700 derailleur, the original RD-6700 and the RD-6700-A. I understand that the RD-6700 is specified to take a maximum 28T sprocket and 39T total capacity, whereas the RD-6700-A is specified to take a maximum 30T sprocket and 40T total capacity."

And the staff confirmed that (item is RD-6700-A), so it's all I need (yesterday I ordered this item with CS-6700 12/30T)… Thanks.
